Link Detox

I am certain people here have used. I did a lot of research on it the past few days and it seems legit. So I used it and ran a scan of my site. Turns out I have a pretty troublesome link profile according to this site. I notice it said most of my cheap directory links were toxic which is understandable.
I do have a few issues. Best of the Web was listed as a highly toxic link and said it should be removed. Hotsvnot and BOTID were also on the list. Do you think I should remove a link like Best of the Web ?

How reliable do you think this tool is ? Just want an opinion on something like this before I go around disavowing links . I did get a letter from Hotsvnot about a month ago asking me to remove their link from my site. Which I did. Maybe that was something I should have paid more attention too.

The fact is, no tool is as good as an actual human review. People are going too crazy and not approaching link removal/disavow in a smart way, although that explains how many of them got in that mess in the first place.

Use a tool? No, as it might recommend to remove links doing no harm or are good. In the end, you need to manually review the list of links, so there is no real benefit.

Instead, make your own spreadsheet to categorise the links and decide which to remove. You can always make a function to check the HTTP status code, or use one that exists.

    Excel - http://nielsbosma.se/projects/seotools/functions/httpstatus/
    Google Docs - http://www.tinkeredge.com/blog/2012/04/check-on-page-for-broken-links-with-google-docs/

No idea about Open/LibreOffice, as I don't use it any more. (The pages that matter are really ones that return a 200, the rest in theory are dead pages.)

A good article (for Excel) about how to group by domain and similar:
    http://www.ablebits.com/office-addins-blog/2013/11/08/extract-domain-names-from-url-excel/

I don't care for directories, but the ones you need to be concerned about are ones that accept any link, are blatantly for "link building purposes" (I don't want to put it as "SEO purposes" as link spamming is not SEO) and there is no editorial review of a good standard. I wouldn't put Best of the Web in the spamdirectory category.

An effort should be made to remove as many links as possible (it will be viewed more favourably by Google), but disavow is not unreasonable where site owners don't respond or want to charge money.

With regards to Hotsvnot, it sounds like they were engaged in a link scheme (as you had a reciprocal link, it seems), so removing their link would be a good idea.

@ryan_uk Gave you the final word on the topic. Go ahead and give the man "best answer". :)

But go ahead and use Link Detox's trial service. They'll run their program on 1 site for you for free. Doesn't hurt as a starting point.

Is it better than manual review? In my experience, no. They weren't able to find as many bad links as I could using Scrapebox. But they probably also didn't run a 72 hour scan on a VPS server.

Linkdetox is a very bad tool and service. I am actually quite surprised that it's recommended by anyone. For the cost of the service I am disappointed with the results. It is clear they do very minimal analysis on links, from what I can tell they look at anchor text of link and strings in the URLs.

For the cost of the service you can hire someone to analyze the links for you properly.

Do not waste your time or money on this service for link analysis. They spend their money on advertising rather than making their service better. Such a shame.

i wouldn't trust this tool. If you have done link building yourself then you should at least have a clue what links might hurt you.
