Link confusion

I am a little confused about google advanced search for link results. I type my site in but nothing is found. I have submitted my site to loads of directories and other sites, and I know that they are there as I can find them manually. I have also put internal back links in my site and these do not show either. Why are these links not visible?

As you might off guessed I am new to this so “Simple” might be the best way to start.

    Many thanks all.

Oops nearly forgot to include my site www.cosmeticsfairy.co.uk

    thanks

    Use yahoo instead.

Google never shows many links and takes months to update the links it shows. It does know about your links and takes them into account, it just doesn't show them when you search for them.

Thank you both for your responses, guess I will just have to be patient the site only started in Jan 06 after all.

I have another small question about internal backlinks. I have noticed that a lot of the links from my competitors are internal backlinks on their site, does this help and if so what sort of internal links are beneficial, I have started to put some on the product description page like “please click to view the rest of ‘Product name’ items available. Will these eventually get picked up as links?

Once again thank you for your time.

Just another query, is it possible that we have a site which has PR4 or PR5,
but it doesn't show any backlinks in google??

Yes that's entirely possible, Google don't show all of the backlinks that they know about. If they show up on the other search engines it should be fine.

Try to link to important pages from within your site using anchor text with the search phrases that you'd like to be found for. This will help your rankings, though not as much as external links will.

Internal back links are very important. That's the reason huge websites have such a big advantage. It makes me laugh how many times someone tells me about how site A or site B has got a ton of links, then when you do a backlink check, you see that 90% of them are internal. Happens all the time.
