I'd not put much stock into ANYTHING posted in this thread as the rules have changed as recently as just three months ago... All links count in one way or another, though Google is now seemingly lowering the worth of both buying and selling links that can pass PR. The "best" way to buy a link now according to Google is to make sure the link is 'nofollow' in some fashion. To learn more, search here on Digital Point and let the information in this thread once again bury itself in the back pages of this forum... Though, for ad rotation, as in the Digital Point Co-Op, you'll find that it may in fact penalize it's worth, as such link exchanges are now considered bad, especially if for Page Rank.
Yes, it is good this thread was brought back to life. How things have changed over the past 3-4 months. Many sites selling footer and sidebar links had their PR dropped. This tells me that google finally can spot most footer/sidebar links and does not count them no matter the PR of the page. Link advertisers need to stop the PR obsession as it puts them at risk and costs them extra $$. The way to go is natural links in relevant content. Don't worry about PR, as long as the page is spidered, indexed, and relevant to your page the link is golden.
When you look to buy links look for: 1) Where else does the site link to? Choose a site that has some integrity with respect to whom they do business with. The site is recommending you as much as they are the other sites 2) How many other links are on the page with your link? More links dilutes the strength and pages full of links with little or no text (content) are not going to pass weight to you. 3) Is the site related to yours? Look for sites that are in the similar industry or contain many keywords, titles, and content associated with your site. You will gain from simple association because your sites will be considered peers. 4) Use only permanent links. Why mess around with renting links, in my opinion, its just not worthwhile. If you business is temporary and quick, temp links might be your thang, but if you run a long-term business, why not choose links that match? 5) Choose links based on the sites other qualities besides PR. PR can come and go, especially if they are penalized. Their penalty is your problem too. Traffic, authority, quality of inbound links, and quality of outbound links are all great factors to consider. There are some great link buying services out there that understand all this. I am not here to flash any names. I sincerely hope you get what you are after and I hope these points can help.
I have never bought links and I honestly believe that with a proper link building strategy you don't need to ever spend your hard earned money in that way. The search engines, as you know, want to see a natural increase in links to a site and are well aware that entrepreneurs attempt to speed up the process. But, you have to be aware that such sites can be penalised and all their efforts can prove, in the end, to be of no avail. May be I'm too cautious but I prefer to put in the daily work of building links the old fashioned way! But, the best of luck to you.
