I'm almost embarassed posting this question. But what does everyone feel the risks are of purchasing links? Does anyone else do it?

    i do

but i understand your concern. who's to say your link won't come off after you pay? who's to say they won't neglect their site or put porn on it? who's to say it won't get penalized or banned?

you just have to make a good judgement when selecting which sites to buy links on, and don't be so trigger happy with your paypal funds :)

I wouldn't be concerned doing one offs because it's hard for SE to know if a link is purchased. But buying links from services that have pay per post bloggers seems very attractive but risky. If a ton of backlinks show up from obvious pay per post blogs, would G place a penalty on your site?

Its better not to buy links. If you purchase links in bulk then its too risky

If you read around on some of googles pages, They say that you will not get banned for sites that link to you.

Ohh yea, really there is not to much risk involved. As long as you buy monthly links your fine. Perm links, and yearly links are the problem. Don't buy any of those.

There's really no reason to buy links when there's tons of free sites available for you to get great backlinks from.... just search around....

Just think - if you do not bought these links. Somebody else who do not like your site did it. You think it is easy like that to ban your site in google?
cheap simple blogs are useful to make you backlinks looks more natural.

Unfortunately for some project almost impossible to avoid link buying.

one thing for sure I know from my own experience is that there are some guys here asking for url in link sale thread and report them to google. PR of my website dropped after I started a thread here, (which happened 2 months before PR update:))
so you are right, its risky.

Buying links will get you a good amount of links way faster than organically building up the number of inbound links to your site but the truth is that it isn’t that good an idea because Google considers buying links in order to pass/get page rank to be a link scheme.

According to Google “Buying or selling links that pass PageRank is in violation of Google’s webmaster guidelines and can negatively impact a site’s ranking in search results.”

For those who do buy/sell links but for only for advertising purposes you shouldn’t really worry since Google considers this as a valid reason. However, you should make sure that the links are properly designated as links for advertising only (no passing of page rank) by…

    * Adding a rel=”nofollow” attribute to the <a> tag; or
    * Redirecting the links to an intermediate page that is blocked from search engines with a robots.txt file

If you have been buying links as part of your link building campaign or has been doing so for your clients this is a good time to rethink your strategy.

I still enjoy buying them and they do work. it may be looked down on but they are powerful. i focus more on obtaining more and more links year in and year out and not on pag rank. page rank is useful if you are an advertiser. if you are more focus about getting more visibility they mix up your link campaign a litle bit more.

The problem is when you buy several hundred links, how are you going to check or keep track of them in the first place? And also like someone said, your links can be removed anytime after you've paid unless you have some software to keep track of them.

It's wrong to say it but if you're buying links from some supreme sources like: yahoo and pay 299$ this wouldn't hurt your website!

Don't buy from brokers, they may get you peneliazed, but there is no risk in buying links from quality websites. Unless they are not baned or penalized. links are just links, and they work for you, if they are good.
You can read about good and bad links at link building blog
