    Good content is always best.
They need to want to come, use your site/product and return to use it again.

In other words has to be something there they want.

But before that, they have to find your site!

Posting in as many forums as you can find helps to some degree.

Perhaps run a referral contest form your site.
For example: Our forum is occasionally runing contest... maybe give away a free domain name or a copy of our software... or maybe even some free hosting.

We also have a built in chat. Users often exchange links.

You can search ofr used and expiring domains which already have traffic. Try to grab the name and redirect the traffic to which ever site you have or build it!
With some effort and pateince you may even grab a expiring domain that has se listings and pr.

Of course you could always buy links and ad space. Generally that gets expensive, but it does help.
There are a lot of small sites they will sell links cheaply. As they grow, so will thier rankings, thus yours as well since they have a ad/link to your site.

Try to have some orignal content for your site, se's love that. They also like rss feeds and SOME graphics.

Use a robots text file to ask the spiders and se's to return and re index/list/update your site (BE CAREFUL) asking them to return to often could get you black listed. They refer once a month submissions. I set mine to every 10 days and working ok.

About your content, do a adsense and overture search on the keywords. Use as many of them in REAL sentences as you possibally can.
This hels improve the number of keyword hits you'll receive and SHOULD show more relevence, thus get you a higher se lsiting/rating.

Of course there is a lot more to it and ppl have written books about the subject.

alot of this is common sense, patience and continual update work.

Above everything, don't try to kick their door down and gain entry. try to be civil and professional.
Things like ... "NOW!" won't get it.
Oh yes... use nomal typing keyboard inputs. Those cool exclamtion points and at codes tend to work against the sites that use them.

of course this is just my opinion and I am far from a expert.
