Link Building The Right Way – NOT The Wrong Way

When I started out link building, I like many thought that link building was a matter of getting as many links on the net in the shortest possible time, however I soon found out that this wasn’t correct.

Over a period of a few months, I was inundated with things to do, such as blog commenting, directory submissions (which I now conclude are dead!), article submissions, building squidoo lenses, forum posting and eventually buying links.

But the main problem I encountered (and if I did many others have too), is that to keep up with the link building plan I had to outsource some parts and my first mistake was to outsource article writing.

    WHY?
Yes they were cheap between $3 and $5 each for a 400 word article, but the problem was that they were not written by a native English speaker, this was apparent once I read through the article having ordered 1 or 2 as samples, taking me time to edit them so that they read well and flowed in English, then when I submitted them to the likes of ezine I got penalised as these had been scraped off other sites and I now after paying for them had to sort the problem out with Ezinearticles.

These writers have very little experience in structuring an article and write a total number of gibberish words. I understand that we all have to eat but by charging a small fee for an article you cannot use is a waste of everyone’s time and effort.

So if you are going to out source your article writing make sure it is to someone with experience and that you can contact them easily, many of the outsource workers I have used are based in India and once you pay there is no way of getting in touch with them.

But here is my plan for backlink building:

    1. Forum posts in relevant niche
    2. Blog comment in relevant niche
    3. Article submission
    4. Squidoo Lens creation
    5. Press Releases
    6. Buy links

The first 4 points above should be used for the first 6 months of any website, then publish one Press Release per month and this should see you at the top spot.

Yes, I was also thinking so, mostly I depend on forum posting because you can easily find your niche through forums all niches forums are available, comment regularly, there are not so restriction to post anything, if you post valuable things/stuffs then you would also get direct visitors to your website.

But you have to do it in a routine say that you have selected 20 good forums and you are posting 10 comments on each, this would be nice ideas to build links.

If you do quality blog commenting then it is also good, because blog comments would stay longer than forum posts.
From blog comments you can also get search engine visitors which may be your direct customer as well.

i do everything you mentioned except for blog commenting - which i find to be stupidly time intensive, completely pointless and quite rude to the blog own (the moment i see "buy video games" as a username i instantly delete it).

and directory submission isn't dead, you just need to submit to the right directories!!! and that means avoiding the crappy out-of-the-box PR0 websites who's owners havent even bothered to change the logo.

I have experimented using directory listings only compared to other types of link building and my findings are that site directories are dead, it may be different for other sites, but my site got listed on 9 PR6 directories at great cost and to no reward!

Many forums related to my niche either don't allow comments or are no follow so useless for backlink building. The only blog comments I seem to get for my niche are commentluv ones, but they are spammed to death.

There are a lot of crappy directories out there. If you spend the time to do the proper SEO analysis you'll find a couple nuggets of gold.

I haven't personally used any buying link companies/sites as im cautious of them (and thats my opinion, not saying they are not any good, like most things, heard good and bad stories).

The best way to achieve links is to find them manually, this allows you to find related sites, blogs, forums which are along the same theme of your website.

As a starter, and in response to your question, some good links to purchase are from the following sites:

    - BOTW (best of the web)
    - Yahoo directory
    - JoeAnt
    - Directory Journal
    - Goguides

There are others, but there are also free directories which are still worth submitting to. When submitting to free directories, ensure you submit to the most relevant category they offer. You can usually tell the quality directories from those that are not so, by seeing the approved sites in your categories - for example, adding a games website to a holiday section simply because that page has a PR value.

It is also a good idea to submit to the most relevant category on DMOZ (please read their terms fully). They offer no paid methods for submission, and there is no guarantee when/if your site will be listed, but when it does, it will give your site alot of trust, especially with Google. Submissions to DMOZ can be as quick as a few weeks to never. For example, I submitted a site of mine to DMOZ in May 2010, it's still not listed, and the last time my category was edited was 2007. It's simply an issue of waiting for an editor to get round to editing your category, and do not submit your site again, you risk the chance of getting your site banned/pushed to the back of the queue.

Also invest in some article marketing. You can either write articles yourself, or employ an article writer to write articles for you. Ensure the articles have unique content, and include 1-2 links to your site using your chosen anchor text within the article, aswell as in the bio section. Once you have relevant articles for your site, distribute them amongst some of the more popular article directories. There are also submission services, but these come at a price, however in the long run do save you time (submitting articles can be very tedious).

Have you tried blog commenting? Search google, technorati, yahoo for related blogs, and write meaningful, related comments to a post. Simply writing 'great article' is a sure fire way of getting your comment deleted.

There are many methods to acquiring links, both paid and free, try some of the above options I listed, or search the forums for more answers. The most important thing to remember is quality greatly outweights quantity.

In response to another post about creating a squidoo lens, the last time I checked, squidoo links were nofollow, however squidoo can still be used as a good tool for generating traffic when used correctly.

Squidoo Lens creation is probably your strongest method listed there. It's true though, you can't just go wild with link building. It has to have quality to it.

Blog comment is very useful. I get traffic from the comments directly in addition to the back link. The important thing to remember is to make a quality comment. If your niche is not related to the blog you are commenting on and your comment is pointless you will likely get marked as spam. Take a little time to find the right blogs to comment on then leave useful comments.

    Have you tried google alerts?

Look...there's nothing wrong with what you're doing, if you want to expend your time with these various chores and following your plan. I spend time myself getting blog links and searching for related sites, but that does consume a lot of time. Is that really how you want to spend your time?

You can supplement what your doing by installing the http://www.zlinkexchange.com software on your site. It is second to none, and it will collect you links while sleep that are just as valuable as "manual" link methods. If you get any links that you don't want linking to your site, you have full control and you can delete them with a click, while keeping the ones that you do want. You also have link management tools which test for webmasters who prevent search engines from indexing the page containing your link. (i.e. robots.txt, noindex, nofollow) plus you can verify all your links in seconds and send nicely formatted email to any webmaster about a "broken link" with a quick click. These tools are unavailable elsewhere on the web.

Ignore my previous comment about links on squidoo being nofollow, I just checked a few and they were ok :)

Buying links on a website is no different than buying an advertisement on an online directory, for example in the UK (and in the US) the Yellow Pages directories also have a website, ours is called Yell.com. Now you can pay to have a link on here, which points to your website (although they don't count from that site). However, my point is this - Google cannot penalise you from buying advertising, but they can and will penalise you for buying links for PR.

It's all about knowing which sites to buy links from, I'll give two scenario's:

    a) You own a site about radios. You search the web, find some sites about radios and send link exchanges. One of these sites comes back and says they will sell you a link placement on their homepage, which has some links already on it, but they are relevant. I would consider this a good link, and you are not buying it for PR, but for the advertisement, the fact that the homepage could have a PR of 1+ is a bonus.

    b) You own a site about radios, and come across a site which is about candy. The homepage of this site has a good PR, although I wouldn't buy a link from here, it has no relevance to your site, and I guess Google could consider this as buying links purely for PR value.

This is my take on it, I could be wrong, and at the end of the day no-one really knows how Google will track and find what you are doing, and if they will penalise what you do. It all comes down to common sense. Don't go buying hundreds of links from the homepages of candy sites because they have a good PR and link them to your radio site!

You are 100% correct, that is why it is best to submit to high page rank article directories, otherwise you might be posting to a directory that could fold any day.

    Humm,

you mention website submissions in relevant categories, however I have found these useless in my niche, they may work for some but certainly not for me and the niches I am in.

Google doesn't penalize any site for buying backlinks...because everyone then could buy tons of links for his competitors to get them penalized.
