In a perfect world this would be great because link building is tough. However, anybody that simply thinks all they need is amazing content to get links and traffic is crazy. Links have become highly commoditized and they aren't given away freely like they might have been in the past. In addition, how will anybody know to link to this amazing content if they don't know it even exists? Yes, great content should be the #1 priority but simply thinking everybody will start linking to it is foolish. You will still need to employ some sort of link building strategy. If you have good content, forums, articles and blog posting are a great way to start getting noticed.
While there is truth in this statement it is essential to remember that "amazing content" is difficult to impossible to create. Suggesting that since it "may" be "best strategy" only addresses part of the question or problem. How do you create amazing content, what is amazing content, what do you do with the amazing content once it is created. No disrespect as I agree what the statement to some degree but the answer "create amazing content" is very worthwhile but most newbies don't have a clue what amazing content is. Unfortunately that creating amazing content can be a lot of work while many are just looking for the best strategy which really means easiest, fastest strategy which is rarely the best, don't you all agree?
