So then do I want to make a "personal" twitter/facebook and try to get traffic to my website through reputation that way, or do I create a profile for the company and try to get reputation? Is it by news letters and new products and services or through just being friendly and talking to people?
Forum posting and blog comments is a really good idea which helps a lot. Most importantly, you do not need to be technical for these, comment on any topic according to your field.
I agree with Adnan, article submission to web 2.0 sites, article directories, forum posting, and social bookmarking for indexing into Google faster and more link strengthening.
I just look for ways to get contextual backlinks for my website whether they are coming from blogs or article submission websites
My 2 cents... The most important factors when doing your SEO would be: - Fresh updated quality content on your webpage. - Deep liking (do not concentrate on linking all your links to your first page) Variety (mix) of one way links. - blogs, forums, social bookmarking, article submission, signatures......all is good - another often overlooked thing is "the first link rule" I believe everything should be done together.... Google is looking at the speed in which you are gaining links and what kind of links. Article submission is still very good source providing that you submit to quality article directories and you articles are worthy. If you doing everything yourself it is very "painful' task but it pays off in the long run. I try to do everything even little things because sometimes these little things can make a big difference. Before you invest time in improving you links or PR remember to check your website. Silly mistake can ruin all your efforts. For example I run restaurant guide in Sydney and I was killing my brain why I can't get any page rank. Just recently I seek help of some smart person who pointed out that number of links on our page is a way to big in comparison to the amount of content. Right now I stuck with removing the links and adding more content.
I also new to SEO on this community, and as per my opinion social bookmarking site is also useful in link building, there is some popular book marking site like Digg, Delicious, and Stumbleupon, which is bring lots of visitors to your site. Adeon.

You asked what you should do with your articles that you are not using for content on your site. I would suggest setting up some web 2.0 sites to get some good links. Hubpages, Squidoo are a couple good places. These should help a bit.
