Link Building Resources for Non-Profits???

Does anyone have ideas for getting one way links for local non-profit organization?

In my case, myself and others donate design time to a few charitable organizations. We need to get the sites SERP up.

I would think there must be some good free sites for this??

    Thanks

Definitely directories. Perhaps you can contact the organizations themselves.

Send email's to paid directories, some should let you in with no fee.

In case of Free links, you will have to mostly depend on
1.- Link exchanges, ( Join sites like link metro etc.)
    2. - Article submissions,
    3. - Developing unique content or service,
    4. - Directories as all are suggesting,
    5. - Blogging,
    6. - Press release ( not as costly as buying links but not totally free. May be someone here knows of a free PR distributer who sends free to a few editors if not many)

There could be other things also but this came up first in my head.
Another one that just came up,
If you have good reasonable PR or traffic, then provide links in return for small $1 or $5 donations bringing you finances to carry on your link building campaign.
    regards

I could never find any instructions on the yahoo submission page about instances where they allow non-profits for free, or any help on that. Did I miss something???

I stopped at the credit card information submission page, and have no intent of submitting that information in hopes of finding a way to get a non-profit listed free.

After clicking on 'suggest a site', you'll have to select the submission option on the right (Standard submission). Probably you have selected the general directory submit option on the left.

Look to other sites in their focus area, if the site is informational links come easy, even if it isn't, non-profits tend to link to their own happily.

Something to take into account though is often non-profits get one of three people to manage their website:
    1. The girl from the mail room that happens to know how to do it (easy linking)
    2. The latest idiot volunteer who knows everything (read nothing) about seo and is a link nazi (impossible)
    3. Some web company (usually couldn't care less about link profile for the site)

I'd go the 'launch' angle... "[non-profit name] is launching this new site, if you can help get it off the ground by linking to it from your site... please link this way."

Check local government sites, local library sites, local school sites for the .gov and .edu link opportunities.

There are also strong directories in related professional sectors such as psychology, social work, nursing etc. what type of helping professions would be interested in their work?

Submit to dmoz, I have several dmoz links (to different sections of our site)... depending on how informational your site is this can be a winner.

Look to local businesses that donate to the non-profit that have websites. Look to general businesses that are local and have a strong website.

And most importantly... ask for anchor text that is productive (see adwords keyword tool), who gives a rats if they rank for their organisation name.

Depending if it's relevant to our sector, I might trade you from www.homeless.org.au

    Thanks Dilip, Dominic and others.

All the information has been helpful.

Dominic made some good points about the types of admins we tend to be working with.

The other limiting factor is in general, a non-profit won't tolerate link exchanges, as is the case with this situation.

The other challenge we face is getting listed on the government and organizational sites that Dominic mentioned.

Here in the USA, it seems to be typical for these sites to be poorly done, not maintained and non-responsive to requests for changes.

At least now I have a long list of things to try.
