Link Building Question... I have a .net and .com pointing to the same website...

I have a .net and .com pointing to the same website, the .net is the original and has years of domain age; but the .com is brand new and I purchased it just in case someone types .com by mistake.

My question is... Should I link build for both or just the original? Or, if I solely built links for the .com... could I be penalized?

If anyone has any advice... I would appreciate it!

There is no content on the .com, I just purchased it.. and it is currently set up as a redirect to the .net.
