Link Building - Home Page Vs Deep Linking

    Hi

I wanted to get people's opionion on the above topic, when link building to your site do you drive links to the homepage or deep link pages most relevant to the anchor text keyword.

    Site: www.shoes.com
    Anchor text: Boots

Is it better is send all links to www.shoes.com or www.shoes.com/boots/

Linking to the homepage will pass the link value down the site tree so both pages will benefit from homepage links

Does an equal weighting of link value flow up from the deep page to the homepage ?

Will you rank higher driving links to your homepage as its stronger page, or will you rank higher by driving links to the more relevant (keyword focussed) page ???

So you would divide links between a homepage and deep page ? would this not dilute the value between 2 separate pages. I think this would be ideal if you had hefty link building budget, but if you had a limited amount of links which of the the three would provide maximum benefit

    Option 1 Deep Link ?
    Option 2 Homepage ?
    Option 3 Both ?

Deep linking for me is the best link building since the pages will pass link juice to the homepage...

I would drive more links to deep page as its URL corresponds with keyword. But splitting links to target on homepage and deep-page won't hurt.

Optimise pages and not sites - that goes for both on-page and off-page optimisation

If you have a page on your site for boots then send traffic to that page and not the homepage.

It doesn't matter, either of shoes.com or shoes.com/boots all the same.

I would go with 3. Having links to a deep page will help that page, but I also believe it will still help your main page as well. giving that shoes.com is still in the name, it will benefit you in the SERPS. Your main page may not see any PR benefits from it right away..but after time it would as the PR juice leaks onto your homepage from your deep page. That's assuming you are linking to your homepage from your deep page.

Well, Like other said it does not matter either the link is on the indexed or in sub pages. But since your product features is on your sub pages why don't you try to put the link on it.

I think at start, we should build back links for the home page, and after that, we move on to deep pages + home page too

Deep linking is more helpful to your site when you promote a certain product. In deep linking, the visitor will go directly to the product that he want to visit, at the same time, you also help your keyword to improve. While in homepage linking, it takes time for the visitor to click the link (depending on the speed of your internet connection). That will also lead to your visitor to leave your site when browsing your site that he might undergo some clicks before he can reach to the particular product that he want.

Well the most important thing is that everybody should aware of the pagerank fundamental

    1) Backlink to any page will give juice to that page only, yes it will give very very low juice to other pages of your site.

    2) It is better to target for homepage keyword first and then target with different keywords for deeplinking page.

    3) Either you link to home page or deeplink page but link juice will page to all page (but remember that passing of juice is very very very very low.

    Got the point

If you can only do one do the homepage. While sub pages are good to have, the homepage should have priority!!

From my experience currently I think it depends on your site, if your site is quite well established and you have enough inbound links to your homepage then you can focus on more direct deep links to the most relevant content. I have used this to good effect.

On the other hand I tried this with a new domain and only drove links to internal pages which seems to rank well but but homepage ranked very poorly, so I agree with choicefreedom2000 that the link juice passing up to the homepage is very low, whereas the link juice flowing down from the homepage is much more.

So my opinion is concentrate on homepage link development with a new non established site, and when you link popularity reaches an acceptable level for your industy then start focussing on driving specific link to the most relevant internal pages ...............

internal links are good if you are having trouble getting a page indexed.
