Link Building from Profile pages of High PR authority sites

The latest in link building is through high PR authority sites, placing links on them is difficult, but webmasters keep finding ways and means to do that and that too almost all of those sites offer dofollow links

So Matt Cutts was asked this question whether such kind of links helps a site, his answer was confusing if not clear:

"Matt Cutts: That is a little bit of a "secret sauce" question, so I am not going to go into how much we do trust that sort of stuff."

You can find the full interview here

What do you guys think, do that helps or G will ignore such links
I feel they cannot ignore such links being coming from high value neighborhood, they will definitely help in rankings, may be not much of help in PR

Read what Matt said after the obligatory legal disclaimer. They don't treat the links any differently than others. The main factor (this is especially true in the case of social media) will be the site owner deciding whether to vouch for the link or not (hint: most don't, and demonstrate that through the use of rel="nofollow"), but other than that, "[t]here is nothing in the algorithm itself, though, that says: oh, .edu - give that link more weight."

Feel free to replace .edu with any other type of link.

THAT is what Matt said. "At the end of the day, a link is a link, and its value (or worth) is whatever it is." In other words, he's saing that the value of the link is determined by how well it stands on its own two legs and the merit/standing it has within the "community of links".

    Does that make any sense?

    Answer made short:

They aren't penalizing such links. BUT if you are seaching for a method to build a website as a long term investment, those links aren't what you should be searching for, as more and more of those sites with profile pages are turning those links to no-follow.

Don't put all your eggs in the same basket.

Thanks for raising this topic cashisfilthitakecheck.

These sites are considered to be authority sites in their niche and search engines will place higher for any links that come from these sites. I won't expect much in terms of PageRank but based on my experience, it does help in improving my search rankings.

Google has its own vault of secrets. If these links from high authority sites would matter significantly in link building, I am certain Google won't let us know. Google likes to keep us guessing all day long.

Well it makes sense, but blindly going by his version will get you to assume that u will rank better if u have large number of links, but that is not the case if you check any ranking in any niche, links from some sites do get more weightage and help u in ranking better

That's because some sites are better able to stand on their own than others. For example, if you and your top competitor sells water bottles, and you're getting your links from blog comments, forum posts/signatures, most directories and the usual social media sites, would you honestly expect your site to outrank your competitor who's establishing business and linking relationships from bike shops that are selling his product (and linking to his site to advertise that they include HIS brand of sports water bottle with every mountain bike purchase), sites that are conducting side-by-side comparison reviews of his water bottle with the industry leaders in the various trade and enthusiast magazines (which also reaches out to their print-based memberships as well), and even going so far as to ask people to review his product on their personal site/blog regardless of whether they like their purchase or not?

Does anyone have a list of authority sites that are good for this purpose, allowing you to create a profile page and put a link on it?
    Thank you

Thanks. Could you either post your list here, or give everyone a link to it.

billybw, I don't think posting it on this forum is going to be a good idea. I am using this method and I know some of the sites are turning off the feature to have backlinks in their profile pages after they found out that people are abusing this feature to get ranking for their website.
