    Hi all,
I am very new to website development so this is really a basic topic about link building. I have read quite a bit on the pros and cons but I do not know the procedures of adding a link.
If I am going to exchange links with someone, do both of us agree to add a section to our scripts so that the person on our site can click on this link and go to our site?
I hope I am being clear on this. I guess I just dont know what to do with a link that I exchange with someone?
Any help on this or point me in the right direction would be great!
    Thanks :)

Yes; technically all you need to do is contact another webmaster and say "hey, i'll link to you if you link to me". You could have a whole section dedicated to links or the links could be specially placed on the front page. It's your choice whether you use the rel=nofollow attribute to order search engine spiders not to follow the link, and link exchanges definitely shouldn't be labelled as such on your site.

To start your linkbuilding WITHOUT spending any money, use the Solicitations and Annoucement forum here on DP, it's one of the best!

Never use automatic directory submission software. I recommend only semi-automatic. At least you'll have some control of your submissions

you can build great backlinks using lavalinx. many people will have strong opinions on what to do as far as seo goes, but read all the information and decide for yourself what is best, is my opinion. i think the best backlinks are from hard work and age, the longer the link sits on that page, so start now doing reciprocal links with other sites that have relevant content on the pages you want to have your link on.

If you do directory submissions yourself you should try Roboform.. I have been using it a year and makes submitting articles or to web directories so much easier.
