Link building and position in SERPs

I have had an SEO expert build some links for me, but when I check the sites position in google.com using a proxy server my site is in 4th spot, then if I take the search string (http://www.google. com/ search?&sclient=psy&hl=en&site=&source=hp&q=key+word&btnG=Search) and paste it into a new browser window I see my site in first position?

Can anyone tell me which is correct and why this occurs?

Different tools will gives different results. So its better to search manually. Google has a personalized search feature. You ranking may change as per your search behavior. Try to query Google from another machine without login to your Google account.

Manual search in Google is your best option to see where your site is at. ARe you targeting broad, phrase or exact match?

    best of luck,

Also it can depend on the google datacenter serving the results.

Google uses a variety of factors to try to show the most accurate result including your location (IP) and your browsing history.

when you check your Keywords SERP then make sure that you have not logged in with google and try search manually and check it in 1 to 10 not in 1 to 100 . i think you will find defiantly accurate result.

I usually use seoserp.com/web_tools/google_top_1000_serps_checker.asp to check my sites position on the SERP

before searching in google, make certain that you have logged out from all application run by google. Second thing, you must check that you are searching things on google.com, not on a local basis. For example, result will be different if you search in google.com.ay or google.pk. Google.com is only standard.

The location of the ip address of the proxy server makes a difference for ranking.
