I have made a post about SEO in the relevant forums and will repost the start here:

Ok so I have pretty much just got my first website online and it is basically just my blog. Its located at www dot doovde dot com
I wanted to start a site to practice SEO and link building with a site that was easy for me to build and the content was easy to write and update. Its a wordpress blog.

Now firstly I have decided to target the keywords online poker blog I did a bit of research on googles key word tool and it showed an aprox average search volume of 5,400 and the bar for advertiser competition was empty.

I have been reading this forum the past few days and been trying to develop a link building plan of action for my site. Can you review it and let me know any changes you would make or give me any tips on where I'm going wrong.

    Forum Posting

I have over 3,000 posts at poker forum eatmystack.co.uk - signature link
200 posts at 2+2 poker forum - signature link
200 posts at cardrunners poker forum - signature link (private forum so not sure of worth?)

I plan to join 5 other poker forums and try to make at least 5 posts per day on each.

Link exchange with other poker blogs

I currently have link exchange with 5 other blogs. Should I be looking to increase this?

    Social networking/bookmarking

    Squidoo page
Submit good content strategy posts to digg.com

    Article Submission

Was thinking about buying some of this possibly this:

    http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread[.]php?t=783886

    New sites

I could also start say 2 or 3 more blog sites or just sites about poker and use them to link to the blog. Is this worth it?

What do you think of my plan? Is it enough or am I way off the mark? Remember I am totally new to this so please any tips/info is greatly appreciated!

How long do you think it should take to achieve my goal? (top 3 in online poker blog google search)

Thanks in advance to anyone who offers feedback!

    Dave

You may want to add links from other blogs to promote your blogs like wordpress, blogger, etc.

still a bit of a novice but i would say two things could/will be a problem

if you do a search for the exact phrase (in quotes) you have over 150k direct competitors. Of those, several of the top slots are held by PR3 and PR4. yes you can surpass them but you need to know if they are optimized for that phrase or not. if they are, then good luck - it will take a lot of link building to get to the top

also, if you look at the broad search phrase (without quotes) you have several millions pages in contention. that implies that your phrase might be a little TOO broad. try narrowing down your competition and you will hit the tops much faster and easier

second, going after a term with no adsense advertisers can be rather frustrating unless you know how to monetize otherwise. my suggestion would be to learn how to monetize adsense first, then move to other forms...this would mean finding a term that actually pays something

i think your choice in keyword will be more difficult than you anticipate (assuming other sites are optimized for it) and will not pay you anything

It seems you would need a higher search volume for your keywords to compete with 150k other sites with 'online poker blog'. The question is why bother competing if no one is looking for it the term.

    Just a thought.

So using quotes changes things? Does this mean you should use quotes when you use google key word tool?

No, not with the tool. You use quotes to get a rough idea of your competition. In other words, how many pages out there have that phrase, or part of that phrase on their page.

I see so even though a term might look good in google keyword tools this might actually not be the case? Is the advertiser competition part of google not so useful?

Is there a guide to determining if keywords are difficult or not anywhere?

Well, everyone has their own opinion and thoughts. What works for some does not work for others. Here is my take on it.

I don't think the advertiser competition is worth a hoot. Use this instead:
    allintitle: "online poker blog"

This will really show you your competition;)

allintitle: "online poker blog" returns 5110

allintitle: online poker blog returns 33600

Just enter the above in regular google search.
If you optimize your pages right, you could easily get number one.

    Good luck

You can add some social bookmarking activities to make it a nice strategy.

The first thing I do is submit my new site to Google, then add a sitemap to Google Webmasters Tools, and then do the same with Yahoo and MSN.

After that, I start link building...

Nice methods also make BL from more forums and updating content at least in week is very important. Now not like before google indexing crawling regulerly and updating many times in a month

IT is always good to have a detailed plan. You missed out directories submission. This method is helpful in getting your site indexed.
