Link boosting a single keyword

We want to reach first position for a single keyword.
The keyword is medium competitive (arond 20 millions google results) we are already fourth position for that word wich is our main keyword with PR6 and the first 3 sites are all PR5.
The word is the first in our domain, the site is 2 years old, listed in dmoz and wikipedias of many contries (nofollow i know).
We are referenced from may istitutional sites (included in DMOZ as well).
The first 3 sites are 2 istitutional sites (not .gov or .edu) and wikipedia entry for that word.
Those sites are online from far more time.

Given all this data and a budget of around 250$ wich strategy do you suggest? A single strong link for that keyword (PR8) provided that we are already PR6 and the first 3 sites are PR5 or multiple links with lower PR, wich mixed keywords combinations or what?

    Thanks in advance.

Site is in italian so it's very difficoult to find relevant contents, we can rely just on the anchor text.

Get many links with one and the same anchor - the keyword you want to be first for.
    This is my opinion.

    good luck

seems you already know the stuff you are doing for being in the top ranking. If you are at 4th position it's good. Just continue with the strategy that has brought you here. And if you are among the top 10 positions, it's good.

Thanks c4cyber, is the last "step" of being first that seems really difficult.
We know that being first for that word, will raise of course all organic searches phrases, related to it.
We seem to have reached a sort of "bottleneck" now, we have 3 links on PR7 sites with more than 40/50 external links on them and I didn't see any appreciable results in 2 weeks.. so I was wondering if it's better to re-invest the money in a single PR8 or in a swarm of lower PR pages pointing to that single key.

    Hi mazzetta,

Have in mind that the ranking does not depend only on the PR but on various other factors also...

    This is very true...

Your keyword in anchor text will also be very useful...

I also agree with keep doing what you are doing...

Adding fresh content may push your website higher. Do you have a blog on this site?

Accumulate more links from related sites with variations of your keyword. Don't just target the single word. Target two and three word phrases that contain the key term too.

Contact webmasters in your niche (or a sub niche of your major term) and tell them why your site would be valuable to their visitors...and suggest that they link to you.

Targeting 3 or more keyword into a phrase is known as using the long tail. This gives you a better chance at gaining high search ranking and will send you highly targeted traffic.

Technically with some on page seo you might be able to beat other three sites. However, if you want to spend that money on links i would say buy some blogposts and submit your site to few very reputable directories and make sure the blogposts you buy have to be on quality blogs not typical DP blogs in Buy Sell section. In addition to this with little effort if you manage to produce a good story and manage to get it front page of digg it shall have huge impact on your rankings after some time. Concentrate on quality.

Thanks guys... I've tryed now to do a bit of seo in the page as well... this upset Google :D but I'm confident it's just a temporary ill
About the links... I'm still confused on the best pratice (many low links for single word, fewer high pr links for single word, any of those with 2-3 words) but keep trying and let you know wich one was effective!
I cannot find relevant link (from my niche) is very hard in Italy and the site is a portal with over 100k pages indexed in G.
