I read an article on link bait and had to re-read it and I still didn't understand what the author was saying, I think they just wanted me to buy something or click on their ads.

Can someone here explain in simple terms for a simple man, what is link baiting?

Link baiting is writing a cool, sensationalistic article that everyone will want to link to. Getting on the front page of Digg.com can get you hundreds of backlinks if you know what you're doing. Have a look at the articles there for some typical examples.

Another form of lnk baiting is writing some kind of plug-in or script that everybody will want to download, and giving it away for free. (Maybe in exchange for a link). Again, if enough buzz is generated, you'll get lots of bloggers and webmasters writing about it with a backlink to you.

It's a form of viral marketing actually.
