Link Bait Idea (will reveal in a week), question first

I have what I think will be a pretty good link bait idea for my site.

Without revealing exactly what I have in mind (I will reveal it in a week), I want to know people's opinion here first.

    The scenario:

    1) I will create a web tool for webmasters, bloggers, and anybody who maintains webpages.

    2) The tool will generate simple static code.

    3) Asside from the useful code that is generated, a link back to my site will also be generated.

    The big question:

Do you think the webmasters, bloggers, etc... who use the code will also post my linkback? Or will alot of these people just strip that off?

If your code/tool is really useful most webmasters wont strip it.. while some of them will..

Can't you just create code to check if the link is intact as the tool is used and disable it if the link is stripped?

The tool will generate completely static code, it won't call my site or anything like that, just a link saying something like: created by /link text/.

If it's just some small linkback to your site, 95% of them won't do that. Unless the link is so big and annoying that it hurts the user experience, they won't mess with it. And this idea you have, it works very well, I have done something just like it only for sending SMS. The back links pile up real fast.

Ahh, then I think a good percentage will strip the code.

Unless I'm a total idiot (my wife says I am most of the time), I think this tool will have universal appeal. It will save webmasters, bloggers, etc... some time on code they didn't even know they needed (hopefully).

I think you will still get a lot of backlinks - more than 70% will retain that link. And if you think it has universal appeal 30% of the universe doesnt matter really :D

I would keep the code. :)

I think a lot of webmasters will keep the link to your site if you are offering a good service

Check how many phpbb sites strip the link, quite a few, but not enough to make it not worth while to create the software. I'm not trying to be discouraging, if it truly is useful code it will be more than well worth it even if some people do remove it.

Well if you are making something which is already there like Class C IP checker, pagerank prediction etc.. etc.. then i think u wont be successful..

But if you have some completely new concept or tool, most of webmasters and SEOs will definetely review it on their blogs and u get links.

Luckily it won't take more that ten or twenty hours to create it, but it should save others time.

I will include a terms of agreement type box that will say that they must use all of the code (even though I know some will remove the link).

I think it will be new. I wouldn't strickly call it an SEO tool, but I think that most SEOs will recommend using it on many sites. :D

don't worry about whether the users will strip the code or not (however, difficult you make it - those who want' to do, will modify it) rather if the tool is good, you'll be getting thousands of backlinks and that is the most important part of the linkbait which you need to focus upon :)

If the tool is a new idea and good, most of the webmasters will keep the link but you will get a few newbies who think it will hurt their site to link to something usefull :)

If it's something existing that doesn't have a link back then webmasters will remove it, but if the code is useful they will keep it and maybe even post about it.

I wont remove the link as long as it is pleasantly fitted in the tool and of course the most important part is the tool is really useful.

What size, font and color (I probably will give options for color) would people recommend I make the link back?

I want it to be unobtrusive but still readable, and not so small that googlebot thinks it's some attempt at a barely visible link.

    Please weigh in.
