Is it bad for a website to link back to the developer on every page? particularly for a hot phrase like 'Internet marketing company'

Does google frown upon this and ultimatly will this affect the websites rankings?

PS the domain is owned by the client

I guess this is really dependent on the company in question, I for one wouldn’t do this if I am paying some one to do the job. After all the company is getting paid for what it is doing, then why should it get a free link back?

I would steer clear of sitewide footer links if it was my site.

I do not think that would be an issue :)

Check out the W3C site. They have the same footer links all over the place :D

I don't think its bad to have the client link back in the footer. But I would be careful with the anchor you choose and avoid being spammy.

Heres an example of a site design company that has tons of backlinks from being listed on every page in the footer of REEF.com ~ Not bad as it helped raise lallo.net to a PR5

Google would rather see the links anchor be your website or company name. You know you could do both -

    example -

    Webfu-Design.com - Design & Internet Marketing

The text describing your link helps... IMO of course.

I really wouldn't bother, especially if the client site and the SEO site are on the same hosting server (devalued link). When I used to do that, I never once got any leads from it...

Why dont you just ask the client if it is ok to add your link.
If they like your work they will probably say yes.

I think it kind of depends on how big the client is. If you design the Hilton Hawaii website and it has your tag on the bottom ~ your prolly going to get a lot of leads.

Especially in real estate I see this a lot with MeyerComputer.com in Maui. Many of their backlinks are from their real estate clients. Meyer builds some sick real estate sites and they get tons of leads from their tag on the footer of all the websites they build.

At the same time, we don't do it. I stopped taggin clients websites on the bottom when Google started sorting similiar websites based on who links back to you ~ and who you link to. That was a couple years ago and I don't think it matters anymore. Googlebot has become way, way smarter.

I couldn't agree more on this and I find it a very unethical practice.
