Very well. The following is an academic essay I produced in approximately two hours. It's a bit over 1500 words, and was written with almost no notice and limited prior knowledge of the text. It is long, which is why I did not simply post it from the get-go, and some formatting may be lost in the translation, but here it is nonetheless.

Dr. Neil Shubinâ€™s Your Inner Fish is an evolutionary biological text. It is somewhat historical in its nature, going into detail about Dr. Shubinâ€™s history as an evolutionary biologist and as a graduate student, alternately falling into academic anecdote and clinical explanation. The book is plainly written for all audiences, balancing detail and wit to be both readable and professionally educational.

The subject matter is predictable enoughâ€”the title is Your Inner Fish, and Dr. Shubin is explicitly an evolutionary biologist. Since life began in water, it is hardly a leap of logic to deduce that the book goes on in length on just that topic. The first chapter, Finding Your Inner Fish, is nothing more than an explanation of this, simply a general preface to explain what the book is going to be discussing. It introduces the fossil Tiktaalik, an intermediary of sorts between freshwater fish and aquatic amphibians in the vein of crocodiles or alligators.

The second chapter, Getting a Grip, delves immediately into the material. It covers the relevancy of the evolution of the hand. The hand is a complex structure with little in common as compared to the fin of a fish. A hand is a manipulator, whereas a fin is simply a stabilizer. Nevertheless, parallels arise. Tiktaalik is analyzed as a unique biological incidence, as it indicates a fish with a wrist. The implication is made that the first limbs were developed in an evolutionary sense for the sake of swimming, as opposed to walking, manipulation or anything else. This was an interesting chapter, further, in light of the class lecture, as it focused more on the relevancy of an articulated wrist in an aquatic creature rather than the parallels between human and ape manipulators, which are relatively similar. The transition between apes and humans is plainâ€”but, once explained, so is the transition from fish to man.

Chapter three, Handy Genes, delved into the genetic implications of hands and body structures. If it were to be discovered, some sort of â€˜hand geneâ€™ would be quite revolutionary. As it stands, research is already being conducted to try and locate what, if any, genetic structures bring about the formation of hands and hand-likes. Humans already share a number of genetic commonalities with other species, including creatures as dissimilar as fruit flies. In various cases, different mutations in the same gene bring about wildly different effects and produce only roughly analogous structures; the entire system, from the perspective of commonality, is largely mysterious. Delving into the genetic structures of fish (notably sharks) was a stark contrast drawn against the genetic s of primates. Further, the genetic tone differed but complimented the Mendellian structures taught in lecture, sacrificing the specificity of the abstract and global for the specificity of the situation.

Chapter four was entitled Teeth Everywhere. Teeth Everywhere discussed dental structures as unique unto themselves. While the lecture covered the similarities and contrasts of humanlike jawbones, this chapter emphasized the commonality of teeth to all living creatures. Teeth are the hardest organs due to their high concentration of the hydraproxite molecule, which buffs them well beyond bone and much closer to stone in terms of hardness. All creatures that can leave fossils have a concentration of hydraproxite in various formsâ€”some in the guise of teeth, as per most creatures, but in various other forms as well, down the line, including the carapaces of insects and various material components of the sponge. The commonality is unique and implies an evolutionary chain.

Chapter five, Getting Ahead, took an entirely new perspective and discussed nerves and a more unclear form of evolution. Told primarily via graduate anecdote, it explained much about the apparently random nature of nerves in skulls. The lecture, by contrast, illustrated more about the muscles involved in the operation of the skull, notably the jaw and the mastication process. Again, the book took a predominately aquatic viewpoint, comparing the structure of the human skull to the structure of a sharkâ€™s cartilaginous equivalent, whereas the lecture focused on the differences betwixt human and ape skulls as related to evolutionary niche.

Chapter six, The Best Laid (body)Plans was almost entirely about fetuses. Fetuses are a unique item to study due to their parallels to evolution in development and their similarity to other creatures as they slowly formâ€”for a time, at varying stages, human fetuses and the fetuses of other creatures, no matter how dissimilar their adult forms may be, look remarkably alike. This gives a unique, if somewhat different view of evolution as compared to the class lecture, which tended to discuss more about genetics and variation in an indirect sense, rather than the generational changes that can be witnessed.

Chapter seven, Adventures in Bodybuilding, was entirely unique to the book and was not strongly addressed in lecture in any context or couching. It asked an interesting question about the origin of the bodyâ€”notably, why a body would come to exist in the form it would as a vessel for various organs, with appendages and limbs. It goes deep into monocellular organisms, the original institutions of life, which follow a similar pattern with their walls and organelles, but have no extremities, let alone fully articulated limbs and heads.

The eighth chapter, Making Scents, again deviated from the lecture entirely. While the lecture discussed the olfactory sense as an evolutionary adaptation, the origin of the sense was not explored. The sense is, in and of itself, not unique for its advanced function, but it does raise some interesting flags in its variation. The olfactory sense first appeared in an advanced form of fish with an unspecialized olfactory receptor cell, implying that it is the origin of both the advanced aquatic receptors seen in fish (notably sharks, since they are known for their advanced blood-detection abilities) and the air-based receptors found in landbound mammals. This gives a good and clear explanation of variation, and could be easily used to quell the misunderstanding shared by the many that believe evolution is a process of linear change, rather than variation.

The ninth chapter, Vision, was entirely about the evolution of the eye. The eye is a unique organ for its sheer complexity. The book provided a good comparison of various eyes from various aquatic creatures, and brought their vision faculties into analog with human eyeballs. The lecture took a different view of ocular evolution, focusing on the distinctions between various creatures and the adaptations of their ocular abilitiesâ€”the color vision of various apes, for instance, paired against the olfactory abilities and colorblindness of most mammals. The book, without meaning to, also tore apart one of the stronger arguments against the evolutionary process (that is to say, one of the stronger arguments for intelligent design) by setting out the proper structure of the evolution of the eye (the argument in question cites the complexity of the eye and its relative uselessness in simpler forms as exemplary for the necessity of an intelligent engineer; the book illustrates many simpler versions of the eye in various stages along the hypothetical evolutionary process, each with their uses).

Chapter ten, Ears, discussed the development of the ear, once again citing sharks, one of our farther genetic cousins, to illustrate its point. This was an interesting derivation, but it did not seem quite as illustrative of the evolutionary process as previous chapters. Probably for this same reason, the topic was not addressed in great depth in class.

The final chapter, What It All Means, was a strong punctuation to the entirety of the bookâ€”a conclusion in the best form. It defined what it called the â€˜universal ruleâ€™ of biology: everything has a parent, or an origin. This gives a strong foundation to evolutionary biology, naturally, as it the nature of the science is dependent upon generations and variations within them. However, while the lectures tended to focus on what is selected for via its viability, the book preferred to discuss this from the perspective of what creatures were able to propagate with the greatest efficacy. This chapter alone contributed perhaps the greatest impact for its philosophical ramifications, and provided several very explicit evolutionary developments, drawing lines between frogs and humans for the origin of the insidious hiccup.

Running throughout the work was the fossil Tiktaalik. Tiktaalik was unique in that it had been discovered in the arctic, a very difficult place to find fossils in. As stated, it appears as a kind of hybrid between modern reptiles and fish, with somewhat ambiguous, strong-wristed (weight-bearing) flippers. It is a transitionary fossil that ties off interesting loose ends between fish and amphibians. The way it is weaved into the work is not unlike a character. Tiktaalik, notably, plays a role not unlike the famous (or infamous) fossil Lucy, being remarkably complete and displaying an otherwise imperceptible go-between betwixt species.

Overall, the book provided a lovely counterweight to the lectures. While the lectures were largely more specific and focused on a narrower span of evolutionary time, Your Inner Fish addressed a broader array of evolutionary forms and topics. The two complemented each other very well, further, in that they effectively brought two experts into the class, and they both touched on the same array of subjects in some way or another through their alternately broader or narrower paradigms. In summation, the work was highly useful in explaining the evolutionary process.
