What do directory webmasters exactly mean by that? And what should they mean? Are they committing to a lifetime link to be alive in exactly that directory or even elsewhere? Lifetime of the webmaster or lifetime of the website? In other words, what kind of commitment should we expect? It reminds me of hosting companies advertising unlimited bandwidth and/or webspace... Thanks!
Ok, lifetime for me means that your site will be listed on my directory as long my site exists, your sites exists, my life exists, or you don't ever do anything crazy like turn your site into porn. That's about as permanent as it gets.
Our Blogs Directory Has featured links that will remain permanent for as long as the directory exists and we have no intention of disappearing soon.
I think it's reasonable and it's what I expected. Others are quoting you, so I suppose I can take that as the common standard. Of course I'd love to see many other directory owners because it would mean more, but for the time being I thank you guys for making things crystal clear.
Although this is generally true you should pay attention to the directory...some are just made for fun, and will not last longer than a few months/a year...and that lifetime is quite small and usually useless for link building
Exactly. And there's not much you could do about it I suppose. That's where my concerns started. But if you submit to a free directory, not too bad, but if you pay and then the lifetime link comes to a sudden end, that would piss me off and indirectly paid directory webmasters also... Maybe there should be more clarity in such promises.
Yea, you should be smart about the new directories you purchase listings in. It's usually easy to tell who's serious about their site, and who just thought it would be cool to own a directory. Look around the directory. Does it look like it's being well-maintained? Also, it helps if you know the owner and know they are the type of person to keep promoting their directory. Well, there isn't any way to get around the fact that if the website dies then your link goes with it, particularly if the directory (or any site that sells permanent links, not just directories anymore) is abandoned due to things completely out of the directory owner's control : health problems, financial problems, imprisionment, death, alien invasion, terrorist attacks your web host, etc. I wouldn't worry about it though if I were you. The vast majority of your lifetime links will likely be on the web for many, many years.
Well yes, I am not that worried, my life is not in danger if a link disappears! I was just wondering what people here think about it. Obviously, there aren't many that are too worried about that! Thanks!
Agreed If you're submitting to a successful and professional websites you won't have to worry about their site being shut down.
But the definition for lifetime links is more or less what we can read above. Life of the website, of the directory or of the webmaster (company). Also, a substantial change of circumstances of the listed website that leads it out of the guidelines. All agree?
I fully agree with the sentiments of the posts. Also, to spot the jokers I would say look for sites that look like a default install and walk away. You will get to know what each directory looks like out of the box over time. Ones that have been actively skinned and/or form a part of another site will generally stay and are not someone jumping on the "owning a directory is cool band wagon". Of course there are vanilla installations that are quality, but you can generally pick them aswell.
not generally true...maybe they're at the beginning, but will do a good job..my oppinion is: list everywhere you can, especially if it's for free..it costs you nothing and it may prove usefull.
Yes spyrit, but shadowknight had a good thought. Basic ones could live little, but nicely skinned ones probably mean that there's an effort and a long term plan behind. Some say that listing everywhere is not the best option, also because of the time you invest in submitting. At the end of the day it could sum up to quite a bit. The same time you could spend in other ways.
uca...you have a point about the time better spent. But i can tell you from my own experience, that when i started my directory it looked pretty awefull, because i did the graphisc myself....(i don't know if it's looking good now but hope it does) ...but i worked on it and turned out to be ok. That's what i mean, looks isn't everything.
spyrit, yes, I agree with you. Even mine is absolutely horrendous, or dull rather, but I'm not putting graphics as a priority. I am actually trying to get into the serps as soon as I can and some PR. Only in the top page of MSN for the main keyword I am thinking of and PR3 (unexpected this fast) so far. I'll do something about graphics at a later stage, as stated in the directory blog. So I understand your point too.
I sell lifetime links they are for the lifetime of the person who submitted them, so if you die... email me
