Very nice job you are doing, giving directory sites bad reputation. Mock me if you will, it is my directory, and as an owner i can do anything. But you have freedom of speech, so you are free to speak.

Thanks for adding a link back for my site.

    smub,

I would like to act as Devil's Advocate here.

I am very new to SEO and as such I do not have the experience you all have but I would just like to put my genuine point of view here.

I am talking from the standpoint of not seeing this thread and coming accross your directory.

If I came accross your directory I would think it was very new since there were no entries in it. I would then look at the PR, it has none so again I would think new directory. I would then look at how many nof your pages are indexed, 4, again leading to new directory. I would check your robots.txt file and links to see if it was a direct link or not.

I would probably submit to your directory as I like getting in on the ground floor but can't tell how you arrange your links (alphabetical etc).

A soon as I saw that your directory cost money to link to I would close your site.

These would be my reasons (remember I have not read this thread).

I only invest my hard earned money when there is a benefit to me. If I invetsed my money in this site I would be going on an unindexed page with no PR and no idea if the site will be any good or not. I have no PR for my SEO and no traffic from the link. It appears that it is not am SEO friendly site and that the owner is just starting a new directory and is greedy (I said appears)

If you could oblige and tell me how my investment would be worth it on your site I may consider it. (You would not get this chance with a normal surfer like I did I clicked the X button as soon as I saw it was a paid directory)

You've deleted all the regular links?

Looking at the last date i submitted to your directory. Should I resubmit in 30 days?

It is YOUR directory, and that is enough justification for doing whatever you want. Just don't ask for submissions to fill your empty directory when your intention is to delete them in the future. It takes time to make the submissions. I can care less if you were to delete all spammers. I go as far as changing their URL to the original affiliate site since they help write the descriptions, but a lot of people submitted quality sites to Ngey.

My intention is not to mock anyone, but setting examples of how a directory can be properly managed. Well, I also need content for the readers by summarizing what's happening at the forums. It so happens that what Ngey did in the switch was a worthy story.

I am sorry, but I just don't understand. You say you were getting lots of spam submissions and only approving about 20/day. That 20 you approved were quality submissions, correct? So, why delete them? It sounds as if you are unfairly penalizing quality sites that took the time to submit to your directory because of your aggravation with spam submissions. Why? What does one thing have to do with another? Am I missing something here?

If your directory was human edited (was it?) then the 3,000 listings in your directory should have been quality sites, why not just upload them and then switch to a paid directory? I am not a directory owner so I am not knowledgable about these things, but I have seen many directories go to a paid directory with the original free listings intact.
