Life of a Laptop (advice please)

When should we get our laptops replaced? I've had mine for almost a year and it sucks (it costed $2000 too, which isn't cheap and cheaper laptops work better:mad: ). The fan is so noisy now, it shuts off randomly because it overheats (goodness knows why they placed the fan on the BOTTOM of the laptop.. it collects so much dust and gets blocked).

Anyways, how often should they be replaced?;)

I'm thinking about getting a MacBook for school (taking down lecture notes, because I heard the battery life is approx. 6 hours? And they're light weight too!). anyone have good experiences with long term use? (I don't have that much $$ to waste on a new laptop every 1 - 2 years lol).

    You get a mac :D
No, seriously get a new laptop whenever you feel the need for a new one. If you feel that your old laptop just isn't up to it anymore.

I'd suggest you do go with what you said, and getting a macbook, the only thing you have to remember is the battery DOES hold very long at first, it gets less and less (i've had the previous ibook g3, g4).

Why not just clean or replace the fan?
Pulling a laptop to bits isn't brain surgery - just do it methodically and make sure you don't end up with extra screws at the end :)

I got a new Presario last year, but only because it was cheap... I've also got a 6 year old Portege that I use "in the field" (literally) - it's pretty bashed up, the battery is only good for about 1 hour, but everything else works as good as new.

    Ah I missed that.

Then I also suggest a PDA. Get one with a full size clip on keyboard, and/or voice recording.

Speaking of Macbooks... I've got the new 2.0ghz Core2Duo w/ 1GB ram and 80gb hard drive. I love it. You cant beat it.. especially if you run Parallels and Cross-Over. Its one heck of a nice laptop.

I forgot to mention that this laptop is like an elephant. It's 8 pounds, 2 hours battery life with a 17" monitor screen ha. Thanks for the advice though, I'll get it cleaned out:cool:

Yikes.. Sony maybe? But a Toshiba is what I have and the fan sucks (apparently lots of people have this problem w/ the Satellite model one ha! Should have done my research prior to purchasing it)

Same! A month eh? Yeah... it was pretty good at a month when I first got it.. just wait a few more months and you'll see;) Hopefully the fan burnout doesn't happen to ALL models.

Well - i have some laptops notebooks and tablet pc's - all from Sony. some of them are really old (6+ years) but the newest one is two year old tablet wich i have no problems with. I also know that Toshiba had problem with cooling system and fans (some freinds have at least). I'm pretty happy from my Sony devices and I'm going to use their products until I get disapointed.
And are there any OLED Tablet PC form sony on the market? I'm going to buy one if they have them.
