There are a number of Creative Commons licenses. you are allowed to use any Creative Commons licensed material for commercial purposes unless it specifically says Non-Commercial on it.

Luckily, the Creative Commons website has the text of each license in all languages, and in easy-to-read versions as well so you don't have to be a lawyer to understand what you can or can't do.

As for other licenses, you have to read them to follow their requirements. Just because you can use it commercially doesn't mean you can do whatever you want with it.

I prefer things as Creative Commons, or LGPL, or Public Domain.

Also check out the OSI (open source initiative) for a collection of open-source licenses you can use for licensing your own work.

this is where ownership comes into play.

When you purchase copyrighted work, are you buying the rights to the work, or a license to use the copyrighted material.

If I sold you a template, I would have to tell you whether you could resell it or not, and if I haven't explicitly told you that you can, I have NOT given you permission.

Now, with open-source stuff, you don't own a licence to use it, you have a license to OWN it. You can resell open-source software legally, as long as you follow the license, and others can also sell it too.
