I have a new site - about two days old - that I'm playing with. Theoretically nobody knows it's there, it's in the build stage and very incomplete. Yet I've had three visits in two days from IP addresses that resolve to Level 3 Communications, Inc. eg. 64.158.138.48 Why are they doing this and how did they know my site exists?
Not my ISP as far as I know. The site is hosted by Godaddy. I have other similar sites on Godaddy and don't recall ever seeing these guys. So I still don't understand why they are accessing me. Unless it's actually someone else and the IP number is not reflecting that.
Level 3 headquarters is about 10 miles South of me - several people in the neighborhood work over there - as Shawn mentioned, major provider of data circuits.
Level 3 provide bandwidth to a hell of a lot of companies. They're also known for not doing too much about spammers. Most likely the visitors to your site are spam bots looking for email addresses to harvest.
