G had to start somewhere. I mean, Alta Vista and Yahoo were well developed before G. Think of that for some motivation.

People do eventually get bored with things, and everything will be superseded with time.... Nothing lasts forever. Look at Geocities for example.

Close to impossible, and there is no real problem with google growing unless the government gain control of it then it would become like a sort of 1984 internet.

The first thing I thought was wow instead of one piss ant shaking its fist at that 20 ton steam roller heading its way we might be able to get a couple of hundred flattened out if we unite!

We should continue this thread talking about Google and

about how we can prevent them they search the pages and not titles and

meta tags like Yahoo does! So if we are going to start a search engine we should also do the same thing!

Isn't Mahalo already trying to do this with the human-edited search?

Bullsh*t, even if we(SEOs) won't use Google other billions of people will.
They will keep on searching it, clicking Adsense, buying Froogle & so on.
To me Google is the best SE to find some info.
One just need to know how to search

That is all likely true, but if we(SEOs) stop pushing google like it was a drug, maybe some of the druggies would use something else. If we offer an alternative, then people that find our site through google will use those services.

There are several other options to publish ads, there are several other ways to integrate payments for buying from our sites, there are other SEs we could point too, there are other stat programs that can help us keep track of things.

As long as we treat it like the only one, our users will see it as the only one. It got big because it was simple and could do no evil. If we offered up something else that was simple and could do no evil, then people may just enjoy that just as well.

Though, it'll likely be a looooong time before it's no longer the best ;)

I am plugged into the Google Machine, and likely will be for a while...though I've recently been toying with pushing alternatives.

If the Google time comes to the end it will definitely occur not due to a thousand webmasters fighting against it.
This will bring additional resonance to Google and will bee seen in newspapers like: "A thousand google spammers are desparate to make living with its avansed anticheat system, they've taken up arms!""

    He he [:D] ..
Google does not want to dominate. All they are concerned about is "relevant results" to all those searchers !

Webmasters contribute only 1% of the other lot.

That's probably the most important thing.

Not a thousand, probably. But the millions of webmasters collectively have more influence over people's hearts and minds than one big company, because people generally spend more internet time on websites other than Google. If one day every webmaster changed all the instances of "Google it" into "search it" on their websites, that would have an impact. Advertising is a subtle thing that works through constant reinforcement.

As for the OP's suggestion, I think the best implementation of human-aided search is coming through social bookmarking websites such as Digg, StumbleUpon, and others. I'll be surprised if we aren't complaining about their monopoly over traffic in a few years time.

Well its about time someone does something, but I don't think a small group of webmasters can go up against billion dollar companies and thousands of employees worldwide.

But then again Google did start out just 2 guys in a basement. :D

Think about google, google depends of people, They can be a billion dollar company, but without other persons, they are nothing.
Im not proposing to remove ur pages from google, just that, we could create a new search engine managed by humans and robots. Making that new search engine we could drive google traffic to our site, and like google depends of their visitors, they will be ruined.
The first thing you can do to help this project is REMOVE GOOGLE OF YOUR HOMEPAGE :)

We should make this thread sticky :D
