Florida here. i own 5 websites. yes i earn revenue from them. as for where someone should begin with a website, do it for something that you enjoy. not to make a quick buck. overtime your skills will sharpen and you will learn to make money doing what you love. it should be a thing of passion. for the thrill of the design and love of code... after you have honed your skills feel free do throw up an ad site or two but i would suggest just doing a personal thing to start off with. not some pre-written blog that you install and go. get a decent text editor with syntax highlighting and spend every minute at the computer at w3schools.com learning how to better your skills. after that, the money will come.
