Guys, i have been trying to figure out various things with SEO.. like what should be an ideal desc meta tag length... i read some reviews and it said something like 500 words should be good enough, but the practically there looks like a loop hole in it for example: i saw website http://www.oridian.com/ ranking on number one position for keyword "Online media Solution", but if you check the page source.. it has mega tag desc of over 2000 words kws also 2000 words.. Can some experts guide me as in what should be an ideal length for this, and if it has to be less, why such web sites are ranking high even if they are not following the basics right
why does this not considered as spamming then?? Has google or any search engine has any set format for this, like what they have for PPC adcopies???
you can put whatever you want even more than 2000 words, but the truth is that google will not count any thing after 235 characters in case meta description. you can read this on google webmaster guidelines
this site has a PR5 which is quite high, whereas their 3 nearest competitor next to them has zero PR also many of them are not optimized for on page SEO
500 words for a meta description? I think you've got hold of the wrong end of the stick somewhere there - between 120 to 150 characters works meta keywords are largely pointless, put 3 or 4 in for the sake of it.
First of all, you should know that at Google (and most engines) <meta name="description"> elements have absolutely NO impact on how your URL ranks for a particular keyword. The meta description element is NOT used by the ranking algorithm. Neither is the meta keywords element. That being said, the meta description IS important because Google displays the meta description as your "snippet" in the SERPs if all of the keywords in the user's search phrase exist in your meta description. The ideal maximum length of the content attribute of your meta description element is around 145-150 characters. Yahoo! typically truncates your meta description when displayed in the SERPs around 145 characters... Google will typically truncate your meta description when displayed in the SERPs around 150 characters. However, Google recently announced that for long tail searches for keywords phrases more than 3 words in length that they are now showing even more of your meta description in the "snippet". I've seen some 300-400 character meta descriptions when the search phrase is 4, 5, 6 words long.
For a SEO experts point of view meta tags limits are given below:- Title tag :- 60-70 character Description :- 160 characters Keywords:- not specified but target 8-10 for Off-page activities
