You shouldn't use any automated submission techniques because the sumbitter might submit it to blacklisted directories which might affect your pageRank.

Don't waste your time and money hiring a company to submit to directories or something like that.
What you need is real in-content links from genuine (& possibly related) sites.

Zexy would be getting +rep if I didnt need to spread it around more, as he's absolutely correct.

Directories are an absolute waste of time when you're at the spammy level of them like that.

It's always better to submit to 10 directories yourself then 100 automated submit. Choose the best and quality directories with high pagerank and submit to the right category. It will give you nice backlinks instead of garbage backlinks

If you ask me, directory submissions are worthless compared to commenting or high page rank blogs, and many other link building methods that take the same amount of time, but get much better results.

You can also build backlinks through article submission and press release
    distribution.

The number of backlinks is important, but more important is the quality. A bulk directory submission will not give the desired results. You should build backlinks from high pagerank domains and make sure that the links are from sites that are related to your site. I have seen a handful of high quality links putting a site on page #1 for fairly competitive keywords.

Blog posts and article submissions provide both short and long-term benefits. See what mustafakamal is doing and note that the strategy is solid.

One that provides real, quality and permanent links to your website. Ideally the service is also defined by the ranking results.

I don't think directory submission is entirely "rubbish". The trick is to make sure you get listed on directories people actually use, and that the entire directory is focused on your business.

Before either paying or spending the time to submit a listing to a directory, I'll do a couple of things:

    1. check the directory site out on compete.com - get an idea if the site actually gets traffic. Plus, compete gives you search terms you can reference.

    2. check PR and rankings of the directory. If it's in the SERPs for terms that could drive targeted visitors to my site, then it's a no brainer.

    3. Decide if traffic quantity/quality, listing options, listing PR is worth paying for inclusion, or submitting my sites to.

I do usually avoid those "manual submission to 500+" directories though, which is probably what you meant by rubbish, right?

How can one stick to "Relevant" and "Variety"?
Are they completely opposite to one another?
