Hey all... I was just wondering the legality of linking to other sites and commenting on articles, pictures, videos of others work and displaying some of that work on my site.
not sure about the legal side but in practice not many are going to object to a link. nearly all would be happy to get an incoming link, and if they do they will tell you to remove it, cant imagine anyone going to the high court for millions
Linking is natural process in web sphere, I don't think anyone object you unless you keep the linking fair and justified.
Yeh, there should be no problems with just linking, but I wouldn't grab their content without their permission, that's the stuff that will annoy people.
This question really belongs in the legal issues forum... not copywriting (discussion area for writers). Whether or not you would have a legal issue would very likely depend on how much of their content you want to display on your site. Some things would be fair use. Others would not be. I suggest you start reading the FAQs and other information here: www.copyright.gov
If you are merely reviewing the other site and using a small amount of their text (cited, with quotation marks) to illustrate your comments then it's really no issue whatsoever. Fair use it's called. As for images, I would avoid copying them without asking permission first.
thanks for replies... yes this should have been in legal sorry I think I was bouncing back and forth between two all day and mixed up the posts. Good points all around. If you didn;t see my AP article post tell me what you think about that. Whats the deal with showing AP articles and pics?
