Legal question about donations

    I was reading this thread here:

    .. and I had a question, but I didn't want to steer the thread off topic. The question is about donations. It's a hypothetical question that I've wondered about on occasion.

    Let's say Johnny sets up a fundraiser for his friend Freddy who was in an accident and needs some money to cover medical bills.
    Johnny uses his own name, address and bank info, and all donations are sent to Johnny's bank account. Once the donations are collected, Johnny pays Freddy's hospital bill.

    Which one of the two will end up paying tax on the gifted money?

    I imagine it will differ from country to country. You are interested in the USA?

    Johnny makes the money, Johnny pays the taxes.. Even if he pays someone else's bills with that money. (Assuming we're talking about the United States)

    The question came to mind a while back when I saw fundme.com
