    I think there is no free legal movie download... but you can pay and get a legal copy of movies through some sites like graboid etc..

    some online DVD rental places allow you to download a version with very strict DRM on it... this is legal but will cost you...

    it´s a grey area at best. exercise caution

    Legal means you have to get legal right from the owner, in internet there is no terms "legal" or "illegal" like real world.
    That's why you can get anything with free as long you keep and use it for yourself and you don't use it for commercial (copy, burn, sell and distribute other people stuff which have trademarks and license).
