This is a huge victory for the march 14 clan . If this holds up then Saad Hariri the son of the assasinated former prime minister will be the next prime minister of lebanon. Now what will hezbolla say as an excuse to keep their weapons?

They always were complaining that they werent given a chance at elections. They got their chance and it shows the majority of lebanon DONTTTTTTTT support hezbolla and another war with israel

Opps title should read Looking like Aoun and hezbolla losing

update: lebanese news stations report that hezbolla supporters are burning cars in sidon. Looks like some sore losers to me lol

Maybe the Lebanese have had enough of Syria killing off (assassinating) the moderate elements in their government. Always pleasing when that shit backfires.

Lets just hope that it doesnt setoff another round of assination attempts here, but your right, it did backfire bigtime against syria and its allies. The lebanese people have spoken:D

I think Saad Hiriri will probably help to intensify the investigation into who killed his father now that the chains have been loosened on him. Lets also see what he does against Hezbollas internal security cameras at beirut airport. This could still get nasty.

Lets hope there is a new era of peace there, but the wildcard is hezbollas weapons. Also if syria can make peace for the golan that would also set the peace process moving.

Even if an agreement can be reached which border do they use: Sykes-Picot line, 1923 border, 1949 armistice, or line of June 4, 1967?

Maybe a compromise that would satisfy both sides. Once that is reached hezbolla will be isolated even more and might throw down their weapons and actually come back into normal lebanese society as they were before the lebanese civil war started.

Hezbolla was originally formed to battle the plo which also had designs on lebanon as a state within a state and only turned against israel because of the brutality of their invasion.

Hezbollah first emerged as a militia in response to the Israeli invasion of Lebanon, also known as Operation Peace for Galilee, in 1982, set on resisting the Israeli occupation of Lebanon during the Lebanese civil war.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hezbollah

    Fail.

Hezbollah must keep their arms and work with the Lebanese army to see off the Israeli threat.

Congratulations to Lebanon and Lebanese people from all parties, all parties agree on working for the best for Lebanon and it's sovereignty, each of them can play an important role and take part of the big responsibility without excluding the other.

They invade their airspace almost daily, and have soldiers on the border. They also wouldn't hesitate to re-occupy the south, something which Hezbollah is preventing them from doing.

Wrong Thraxed, Hezbolla started to get powerful during the israeli invasion but they initially were fighting against the plo in the south. Everyone in lebanon knows this and this is one reason they still enjoy popularity in lebanon because they stood up to both israel and the plo (both of whom were invaders). They originally fought with the SLA(south lebanese army), and this is not known to most people outside of lebanon, as most people thought the SLA were just lebanese christians but this simply isnt true. Somehow the SLA and hezbolla turned into enemies but when hezzbolla kicked israel out of south lebanon they were gratious enough to let the SLA come back into south lebanon and promised not to harm them and they stayed true to their promise.

Imad very cool words to say:). Im really hoping also that the palestinian refugees in lebanon are not forgotten in this equation, as I have personally seen their living conditions, and they deserve better than this.

IF hezbolla joins the government and combines their weapons with the lebanese army, no one would be able to mess with them whether its israel, syria or iran.

The major issue with the Golan is water. Much of the dispute dates to a French-British colonial compromise that but the headwaters of the Dan (Jordan River) on the Syrian side of the line. Syria made numerous attempts to divert the flow and dam the springs.

If a water deal ca be reached it would be huge. I remember going to the latani river in the south. That river has been diverted many different times . When I went there in 1991 it was diverted to israel, the next time i went there many years later it was diverted to syria. If turkey can get into this deal, it could be the one thing that could push all the countries in that region to peace starting with syria and israel, and hopefully a domino effect will happen.

The region needs water. Making a deal with Turkey will greatly improve the situation. However, for security reasons I doubt that Israel will give the headwaters of the Dan to Syria.

In any case, the Syrians are pushing for the 1949 Armistice Border. Israel will never agree to this. The Syrians would then declare that the land is occupied and the conflict would continue. But with the loss of the Golan and nothing in return.

    hehe. Its comedy evening.
Hezbollah must keep their arms and work with the Lebanese army to see off the Israeli threat.

    :D

Lets assume Israel did pose a "threat" on lebanon. Naturally the last thing we want to do is to control an inch of lebanon. We have enough problems with syria and the pals.. fact is, we left Lebanon 9 years ago...

    But lets assume.
Do explain, how in your mind, a fundamental terrorist organization of no more than 5000 active fighters funded by Iran, whose cruelty is unmatched in the world, who appear on all lists of terrorist organization (both EU US and the UN), could possibly prevent the strongest army in the region and one of the world's best from taking any piece of lebanese land, if it was in his interest?

Are you having too much good whiskey there in London?

Hezbollah is the greatest enemy of Lebanon, as many Lebanese would say. I guess you are too, or is it the murder of as many Israelis as possible a great cause in your mind?
