Hello all. I was recently going to set up a blog on some budget hosting and I would like minimal use of CPU and space, etc. I was looking into using wordpress, but I am not sure. Is wordpress resource intensive as compared to other blogging scripts? do any of you have any suggestions to a "lighter" blogging script with basically the same main features?
The use depends on what you do with the blog and how much you add. If you load a bunch of images and get loads of traffic, you will use more bandwidth and other resources. If you do videos, it will take even more. The best platform and by far the most popular is Word Press. Most budget hosting plans can handle two to three of these blogs without any problems. My host sells a $1.55 a month plan and it is able to handle two blogs with tons of traffic without any problems at all.
Where the hell are you finding a 1.55 a month plan? Anyways, I plan to have images that are not part of the template loaded from photobucket or something, to save bandwidth, etc.
Wordpress, like Joomla, is a server killer. If you plan to have lots of traffic (few thousand visitors daily), than you will have problems with it on any shared host.
Wordpress is very good, don't fill it up with plugins etc and you will probably do good. If it's popular, build some adsense in to it.
You can always upgrade later and most blogs do not kill servers. I know very few blog owners who have their own server to handle blogs. If it becomes super popular and you see you are over using bandwidth, you can consider an upgrade later. This is a ways down the road and nothing to be concerned this early. Here is the host I use: http://www.a1whs.com/ Do not host at the same place you have your domain registered.
If for some reason your hosting gets canceled, and your domain is registered at the same place, you will lose access to both domain and hosting. This could happen if the hosting company gets report of spammer or some other offense. If the name is separate, you can always get the site back up with a back up at another host. I have some good articles on my SEO blog if you want some more webmaster help.
Thanks for the list newzone, I will be looking at those. @allout, thanks for the link to your seo blog. You seem to have alot of information on there. Bookmarked & reading now
