    Hey everyone,

Can anyone recommend a good tutorial that explains how to program on the Windows platform? I've taught myself Java, PHP, Perl, Ruby and several other languages, but this is by far the worst documented architecture I've come across. Am I missing something?

    Thanks.

www.expertsexchange.com is a good site if you are willing to pay $9.95 per month for it.

    Mainly for specific problems though.

Do a search for .net in google there are thousands of good sites that will have tutorials.

I managed to pick up enough to build a basic program pretty easily. Easy to learn and pick up.

Just recently I moved my personal website over to ASP.NET C# from PHP. I use Visual Studio, it has a great help section. Also, http://www.asp.net/QuickStart/aspnet/Default.aspx this might help you.

Just dive right into it and you will do just fine.

Yes use Visual Studio 2005 - I use it daily. Very good way to learn .NET too and to stay ahead for Vista development too.

Since we are on the topic of .NET, the full-featured Visual Studio 2005 Express Editions are free for download from Microsoft for the first year.

What it means is that from 7th Nov 2005 to 6th Nov 2006, the products are free for download and usage. After 6th Nov 2006, they will become paid products and no longer available for download. But as long as you get it before then, you are allowed to continue using it for free.

I've downloaded VB Express a while ago and never got to using it yet. You can get your copy here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/

best way to approach learning .net for newbies is to use the express line of products.

Nothing beats the msdn site for this.

just do a search on express edition within msdn and you'll get all you need to know!

++ for visual studio express. I'm currently developing a fully blown practice management suite using c# express and sql server 2005 express.
No problems whatsoever except a bit of fiddling to get Sql Server to accept incoming network connections.

Have you looked at the MSDN library? I think it has the best documentation for programmers.
