Ok, what i was trying to say with this title is this:

When i started with informing myself on all sort of different topics including SEO i am now at a point i feel unstructered regarding with the things i picked up along the way.

Of course all the basic things come in play such as Page Title, Meta, Keywords/phrases in the content and a whole lot of other things i left out.

I'm planning to start a website that is related to some sort of niche and i found out even though the niche is quite popular i see oppurtunity to get good positioning in the SERPS.

Keyword optimalisation and such from the top websites i see now in the rankings have pleasently surprised me. (No SEO efforts has hardly been done ) From what i learned here through out the days made this the deciding factor to take them on.

I see it as a SEO war and it's my mission coming days/months to get on the first page in G's search engine for the keywords/phrases i am targeting.

Now from all the bits and pieces i have been picking up on this forum and other forums as well i am kind of confused how to deal with this in a structered and organized manor regarding research and tools that i need to use.

How would your mission plan look like from A-Z regarding competition research and tools to use for this?

What are your favourite online tools?
What are your favourite offline tools?

I am very curious in all your answers since i can derive a whole lot of usefull information for the time i want to spend coming times. I know people will say just browse the forums and i will continue to do so of course but if you have the time and don't mind giving your view on how to get organised regarding gaining knowledge and how to plan such a task i would greatly apreciate it if you can share what ever you want to share :)

Thanks guys for your input. What do you guys take in considderation to improve your SERPS?

What are the things you look at and investigate if you want to get better or topple the SERPS of your competitor regarding the keywords your after?

I look at the sites in the top 1 or 2 spots and try to determine what they are doing that i am not. I continually work on BLs and continue to add new, keyword targeted, content to my site.

Yeah that is a good point of course ;) Could you tell me maybe or anyone else for that matter how i can filter out any results when i check the backlinks of a website?

For instance when i type link:yourdomain.com i get a lot of results that contain the domain i am checking...

    Like this

    yourdomain.com/page1
    yourdomain.com/page2
    yourdomain.com/page3
    yourdomain.com/page4
    yourdomain.com/page5

    and so on.

How can i leave these results out and truly the determine the backlinks that G got indexed for the site since a backlink from your own site doesn't truly count.

Or does it  Anyhow how can i leave these ones out?

Im not sure how to do that. Sometimes G counts an internal link as a BL. If they do, good for you. Its hard to determine the value of that link but its there and thats good. Typically i have seen google will eventually filter out those links.

Your question reminds of something else i do. One thing i do is look at which websites are linking to my competitors and see if i can get a link on that page also.

Yep, that was also something i planned to do ;)

Too bad you don't have a solution for this, i'm wondering if there is some sort of search parameter you can use for this...maybe a ''-'' operator of some kind can be used for this dillemma?

i tried the minus symbol, it didnt seem to work. I wouldnt spend too much time on that. There's much more important work to be done.

If you really want to know, maybe start a thread aobut it and maybe someone will chime in.

It would save more work shoveling through the results to see who's giving them backlinks :)
I will make another thread about it as you suggested, that seems like a good idea.
