I currently use photoshop to slice & create my sites however I think now it is time for me to start coding my sites from the ground up. Which books are really useful for complete begginingers?

You don't need a book. Go to the web and start on tutorials of HTML/CSS.
The W3C school is a good start. Once you have the basics, you can turn to tips and tricks or look into designers/devloper books.
But spending money to learn the basics of HTML is quite a waste.

id recommend "Teach yourself Visually: Web Design". Its a great book, lots of images and step to step guides, so its hard to not understand this book :D I bought it, and i didnt regret buying it! Money well spent.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?ie=UTF8&...rh=i:aps,k:teach+yourself+visually+web+design

However, if u cant be bothered to spend cash (Its 18 GBP lol...) I have the torrent as well, its a PDF i think, so u can read it on the computer while trying it out :D
    http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/6272853/

I would recommend the book though, its nicer to have something to read when ure bored

I highly recommend 30 Days to Learn HTML & CSS by Jeffrey Way, a series of free video tutorials that will take you all the way from the basics of HTML and CSS to hand-coding your first website.

Also included in the videos are best practices and lots of tips for future reference.

I wish I'd found this series when I started out - I had to learn the hard way, via books and website tutorials. I personally find videos more engaging and demonstrative :)

Good suggestions have been made already about code references. I also like http://www.htmldog.com/

Another book that helps A LOT with design issues (not coding), "Don't Make Me Think," by Steven Krug. Brilliant.

I operate a review site focused on books/courses for learning programming languages. You should check it out - http://www.ecoursify.com/.

I agree that w3schools is a great resource. However, it isn't really a step-by-step guide to get you started.

Personally, I think the Visual Quickstart series of books is best for learning any programming language. You can check out my review here: http://www.ecoursify.com/visual-quickstart-html-xml-css/

My next review I'm posting will be on the free Tuts+ course listed above. That's definitely another great resource.

Check out Lynda.com - awesome video tutorials for $25/month.

You can learn a ton of CSS & HTML by borrowing from existing websites. If you have a Mac, Google and download a free app called SiteSucker. You can download an entire website - any website - and begin to pull apart their CSS & HTML.
