HTML is not really a programming language, it is a design language, where as PHP is a serious programming language. I highly recommend a book called PHP and MYSQL Web Development by Welling and Thomson, it is probably the best book on the subject.

Do you need professional level PHP knowledge or just for your own sites? How did you manage to learn HTML without getting any server side processing at the same time? From my very first site I knew that standard headers and footers were wiser than having them coded over and over. That one little thing drove me to learn PHP.
