When you visit a website and read their articles don't you automatically make a quality/no quality judgement call?

Absolutely. It is called content marketing. If you produce quality content, people will want to share it.

Its a lil bit outdated notion called - high quality content. Since I remember everybody use this phrase, but significant majority can not specify what HQ content really is. Most of SEO people think ...yes I can do it, I can create a HQ content. But here is the point:

    - Just because you think content is good, it doesn't mean others will thing about it same way.
I often met with belief that more specific, technical and detailed content is just better. But its not true in most cases.

It's all depends on your audience. If they are specialist, they will expect for technical and detailed content, but if your audience is really broad - technical and detailed content can badly affect your SEO, because most of them will not understand detailed notions.

So the big IDEA behind it is to focus about the audience first, and get them appropriate level content - it will decrease your bounce rate, extend users session time, and those factors in search engines "eyes" are measures of content quality.
