Yes, forum posting helps too. But unfortunately, because of the structure of forums, it's hard to find a high-page rank topic that hasn't gone on page 2. Most backlinks are for the first page of the topic so... you have to post your message+link on the first page of a topic you think will become popular in the future. If you get one of those...you're set.

How do forums compare to blogs? Well, blogs have a different structure and most of them display all the comments on the post's first page. Or they(the blogs) display allot more comments on the first page than the number of posts displayed by a forum on a topic's first page.
