Lead Generation - Is it Legal to do Legal Lead Generation and Not Be a Lawyer?

I have been doing legal lead generation for over 5 years. I cater specifically towards Social Security Disability and Personal Injury attorneys. As of friday I received a phone call for the Social Security Administration saying I am illegally representing myself on my websites. I told them I not only state that I am not a lawyer on the site but also state it is a legal referral service. Do I face any legal problems if I continue to run this with me stating on the site and disclaimer that:

    1. I am not a Lawyer
    2. I am not the social security administration
    3. I am a legal referral service and provide no legal representation

I am guessing as long as you don't say your a lawyer, and dont promise certain things that you cannot keep, your fine. But I am not a lawyer.

IANAL, but I believe the law varies from state to state.

Here is California state law, for example:
So if you are operating within California, you are probably OK as long as you have registered with the State Bar and follow their code. But, as I say, IANAL, and there may be exceptions to that rule. And requirements in other states are probably different.

Thanks, I figured California had some crazy guidelines for it. They tend to be a state ready to make some money by making you pay for yet another certification.

Legal referrals is a tricky area of the law. Not only do different states have different rules, but some will only allow lawyers or licensed companies to refer cases. This is an area I am pretty familiar with. If you have specific questions feel free to PM me.
