LDS Church Member "Mitt Romney" Running for President

    http://www.runmittrun.org

    Is his official website.

Mitt Romney is (will be in Jan) the first and only LDS ("Mormon") presidential candidate in modern US history. He's a republican, and the governor of the most democratic state in the United States: MA.

So the question? Does a "Mormon" (though we prefer being called LDS Church members, or just Saints for short) have a chance of being president?

Maybe only time will tell. So far, though, he's already popular in the polls.

    I live outside your country
    Thank God

And I dont support any religion.
I believe in god but i know that you dont need someone else telling you how to think, worship and whats right and wrong.
the answer is in your heart.
Learn how to listen to it.
it holds more knowledge than any book or scripture.

I see the lies being comitted in gods name, I see the things people have been told to believe and I know they are wrong.
    You have been lied to.
    The answer is in you.
    Namaste.

I know: many times, a LOT by liberals here on DP, but not within my own religion.

It holds more INSTINCT and EMOTION than any book or scripture. Not knowledge.

Perhaps "Allahs" name, for those Islam extremists (not all Islams being extremists, mind you) - depending on which God we are talking about? I believe in one.

True... not like he's forcing you to though.

Religion and government should remain separate, including in the leaders. Religion has been the cause of massive suffering throughout human history. Christianity has been greatly watered down lately (look at the posts through this forum where people try to twist the literal words of the Bible to fit their lifestyles), but Islam and Mormons are still pretty hardline religions that should be removed from human discourse.

By "seperate church and state", they mean that the Pope, for example, cannot rule the nation. The leaders have their freedom of religion and can believe in one and use one actively in their leadership if they want. It's one of the great freedoms of our country. If you don't like it, leave. If you're not in it, don't worry about it.

True so far... unfortunate but true.

    Also true and unfortunate.

Um, excuse me?? "Hardline"? Hardline, according to dictionary.com, means "uncompromising" or unmoveable.

I can't speak for Muslims because I am not one, but I can say that we "Mormons" are firm in our beliefs, but not a violent cult or mob, if that's what you're getting at. (I'm not saying Muslims are, just the radical extremists are, which is a small percentage of their population.)

What other facts must I straighten out with you?

Islam is most definetely a religion of violence and domination. Read this- http://answering-islam.org.uk/Quran/Themes/jihad_passages.html Most people think that it is intolerant not to accept all the beliefs of others. But what about when they believe that you must either convert to their beliefs or die?

Now Mormons are a little bit different. You have never had any significant power (such as led a nation) and so we have not had an opportunity to see how you would abuse it (as every other religion in history has done). But we can look at some of your belief systems and the way you treat others with less power(such as women) in your communities. http://www.exmormon.org/ Read this and I think you will find some disturbing issues are discussed.

No, it isn't. Only the extremists are violent. There are millions of peaceful muslims. You must realize this.

Well then, if Romney is elected, it will be interesting to see how many more people hate us. Saints do not abuse their power.

I don't quite understand: you think we degrade women and think they are lesser than us?? You are seriously misinformed. We put women on a pedestal in our religion. We don't worship them or anything, but we respect them and believe they have their sacred duties to perform in this life, as do our men with the priesthood.

Of course, you cite an Anti-Mormon website... how predictable of you. The discussions on that site are horribly twisted to make us look bad.

Now, try checking out www.mormon.org and www.lds.org - two of our official church websites.

Let me give you some facts: "Mormons" are the largest "volunteer group" (as we've been called, since none of us are paid for work in the church) in the world, with the largest WOMEN'S ORGANIZATION (the LDS Relief Society - and you say we don't honor women?) in the WORLD. After Katrina, our church was the first to respond - except for national guard/immediate emergency services, we sent ... 13 semis full of supplies down to the affected areas.

We're the fastest-growing religion to date, strong with over 14 million members worldwide (only has taken about 150 years. Keep in mind the Catholic church has been around for a couple thousand), and we don't discriminate based on gender, race, etc. We have standards our members must uphold (e.g. murderers are excommunicated, embezzling church funds is also grounds for excommunication), but we do not discriminate.

After reading these 2 paragraphs, it looks like I'm bragging, but I'm just trying to give you some facts first.

Please look to the right of your browser, scroll back up to my other post and click on the link to what Muslims believe. There may be millions of peaceful Muslims, but there is a BILLION violent muslims.
More people will hate you if he abuses his power. If he is just, fair and leads the economy to new heights, he will be loved. But what horrifies me is that you use the word "saint" in reference to him. You consider your leaders holy? That's a terrible philosophy.
...sacred duties like being subservient, having lots of babies and not having an equal say?
This terrifies me. Also, I'd like to know how you can believe in something as ridiculous as joseph smiths story? Hasn't there been enough debunking done? I shouldn't even bother trying to discuss this, I know from hard experience religious people never think with reason about their beliefs, just "faith". Faith=blind tribal ignorance.

More misinformation - Anybody elected to Presidency, first of all, is not going to be liked by everybody, let alone loved. I could give some examples for Bush but that would take us way off track.

I use the word "Saint" to refer to him because we are the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It's just short for "LDS Church Member" and another word for "Mormon". We don't think our leaders are holy. You are jumping to conclusions. So no, there is no philosophy in that.

No. Obviously, you have more misinformation. Sacred duties like raising a family as an at-home mother and being a good wife, and contributing to the Relief Society. Men have their own duties with the priesthood and being a good, supportive husband and father. It is our religious belief that families are important and eternal.

You're scared? Why? We're not evil...

It's not that ridiculous... just a little bit of an open mind and a contrite spirit... not to mention a willingness to believe. If you have these, you will know. Religious things cannot be expressed physically all the time.

"21 And now as I said concerning faith—faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; therefore if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true."

From the Book of Alma, 32:21 - http://scriptures.lds.org/en/alma/32

It doesn't say anything about blind tribal ignorance...

    1. Mormons have no chance at winning president. We'll see a black woman first.

    2. Mormons are as nutty as fundamentalist christians.

    3. Mormons, please - for christ's sake - stop nocking on my door, take your white shirts, black slacks, and bycycles over to someone elses house. And try to stop looking so lost all the time! :D

    4. Even as nutty as they are, a few mormons are ok people, I was "friends" with one in college.

    5. Mormons with power = A no no. They molest and marry their own children, their friends children, etc, etc.

    Example:
Warren Jeffs (Fundamentalist Mormon on the most wanted list - notice they (the other mormons) haven't turned him in yet?)
    http://www.fbi.gov/wanted/topten/fugitives/jeff_ws.htm

So, if we could just get them to stop inbreeding, molesting children, topping the most wanted list, and knocking on our doors harrassing us, they might be a little more popular around town :)

....if you really wanted to debate, you'd quote my post, which explains facts, rather than HIS post and state your own myths.

    We'll see, I guess.

Yeah, that's a powerful statement :p Like I can take your word for that? You know, it's funny, because LATER in your post, you call us the same things as fundamentalist christians... with that link to the FBI page. You obviously don't know what you're talking about?

If you get a knock on your door more than once, it is not a Mormon missionary couple. If you do not want them to come back, they WON'T. I would know. My brother served a mission a few years ago. And I will be in a few years as well. I also went with the missionaries tracting once, several times they were asked to not come back, they made a note, and they never did go back.

I think MOST Mormons are okay people... and you know it... you just want to exxagurate your point. (no idea how to spell that)

Sigh... more misconceptions... did you even REFERENCE www.mormon.org? Obviously not. We do not molest anybody, we do not marry our own children, we do not have more than 1 wife, we do not marry our friend's children (well, actually, that's technically not WRONG...), I think you're starting to not make sense.

    LOL:
That's not the LDS church, that's the FLDS church, we do not have any affiliation with. Anybody with multiple wives in our church is not allowed to be a member. Also, we have 14 million people, not 10,000. None of our true prophets have ever been on the FBI's most wanted list. :)

Not happening ANYWAY... you're wasting your time...

A source would be nice. ... also not happening... more waste of time...

Yeah, the "prophet" of the FLDS church... not ours...

No, harrassment is if they don't stop. They DO stop. If they continue, it's Jehovah's Witnesses, not Mormons.

Why aren't all those polygamists jailed?

A recent (1998) poll by the Salt Lake tribune found that 35% of Utah's population think that polygamists should not be prosecuted. Many of the folks in Utah are descendants of polygamists, and don't care to heap the same type of intolerant abuse on their neighbors that the early Mormon people were subjected to. In addition, the laws that were written against polygamy are basically laws against consensual sensuality, which cannot be prosecuted in today's legal climate.

How many Polygamists are there in Utah?

    About 60,000
    (5% of Utah Mormons)

Getting to the highest heaven :D
Mormon doctrine states that in order to enter the highest heaven that those who enter must be living in polygamy. Mormon doctrine also states that we believe in being subject to the laws of the land, insofar as those laws protect individual rights. So for the time being, the largest Mormon sect, the LDS church, has decided it is more important to live the laws of the land than those of God. Other Mormon faiths have made a different choice in the matter, and practice polygamy in defiance of the unjust laws of the land.

Is the Law of Polygamy enforced within this religion and how long has this been in place?

Polygamy was lived secretly in the LDS church from about 1831 to 1852. The first mormon prophet had 20-30 wives and was murdered for practicing plural marriage privately while denying it publicly.

Polygamy was lived openly from 1852 to 1890 by the LDS church in Utah. The church made a show of abandoning the practice in order to get statehood. It wasn't until the second manifesto about 20 years later that the church started excommunicating new polygamists. Since that time, the LDS church has taken a very harsh and intolerant stance against anyone who publicly admits that they practice polygamy, or claims that it should be practiced.. (Polygamy still happens among members of the LDS church, just so long as those practicing in it are discrete, but not a moment longer.)

When the church abandoned plural marriage with the second manifesto, existing polygamists were granted amnesty by the government, and were allowed by the church and the state to continue living polygamy until they died. The last practicing polygamist LDS prophet died in 1918. It is believed that the last church sanctioned polygamist died in 1976.

    Where are the polygamists?

The largest concentrations of Polygamists in Utah are near Manti and in Hillsdale (Colorado City, Arizona). Practically the whole town of Colorado City is owned by a religious trust, the members of which practice polygamy. Wherever the LDS has a large concentration of Utah born members, you can be sure that there is polygamy close by.

    Why?

Not all Utahns are Mormons. Those 5% are not mormons, they would have been excommunicated.

No it doesn't. Where did you get that? Another Anti-Mormon website? REFERENCE WWW.MORMON.ORG already, geez. Get it from the source.

No we haven't... find me an example then.

It wasn't secret... look, here, I'll even link you up to our official view on polygamy: http://www.mormon.org/question/faq/category/answer/0,9777,1601-1-114-1,00.html

    QUOTE:

They aren't LDS members, they are FLDS if they practice polygamy.

And I noticed you never cited a source... care to do so? :)

NEVERMIND: I'll do it for you! ^_^ LOL - you got it from HERE??? http://www.absalom.com/mormon/polygamy/faq.htm

This guy knows NOTHING of the Mormons, then, or is twisting facts to make us look bad. Seriously, why not go to the official source?

Quote -- "Also, I'd like to know how you can believe in something as ridiculous as joseph smiths story?"

Joseph Smith's story is "hard to believe" but Allah coming to Mohammad in a cave, an epileptic polyamorous pedophile with a penchant for being a brazen liar and caravan thief who lived off his wife's riches to select him as the messenger of God and direct him to lead a religion that would tolerate no diversity and command them to convert the rest of the world by any means including murder, lies, and barbarity in God's name----

    is believable?

As for Mitt Romney... I think he stands as much chance as any other candidate regardless of his religious beliefs. He will be judged on his merits like anybody else. After all, there are liberal and conservative LDS members just like the rest of our society. One cannot steriotype a person because of his beliefs--- if we could, then who in the world would have believed Harry Reed was LDS???

compuxp... you can't deny the facts.

FACT: Palygmy was accepted and practiced in the LDS CHURCH until it was outlawed by the government , and then you're present leader made up some new doctrine saying it's no longer ok.

They didn't change because it's the right thing to do, they changed because IT'S ILLEGAL. And all the mormons who actually believe in their religion didn't just change because a law told them to, they continue to practice it to this day. Simply saying they aren't mormons is like saying none of the murders in the middle east are by muslims :D
