LCD screens and color

I paid a visit to my brother's yesterday and checking one of my sites that I've been working on recently the color was really washed out on his LCD screen. One of the main colors on the site (FFFFCC) didn't even show at all.
The monitor is three years old and part of a package that was quite expensive...

Is this a problem with some LCD screens that others have noticed? Or is it just his monitor?

LCD screens (esp. older laptops) used to have that problem, some colors just wouldn't appear. Newer ones are much better, and can show the finer pastel shades. Im using a 2008 Samsung LCD and can view that pastel yellow FFFFCC with no problem.

They are also much more sensitive to viewing angles and background lighting etc... again laptops are the worst offenders including newer ones. If you are a pro graphics person such as a designer or photographer etc you can get devices to calibrate the monitor correctly for each lighting condition you commonly work under but there has to be simple acceptance that the majority of users do not use this and so subtel colour changes etc are simply not going to be visible.
