Layout Size?

What size of layouts do you usually make?

I usually make mine fit for 800x600, even though a lot of people now have bigger resolutions, I still would like my websites to be viewed easily by those with smaller resolutions. How about you?

I have been moving away from all of this type of development and moving towards sites that use percentage based layout so that it looks good no matter what resolution you are looking at the web site with.

I always make my sites about 700 to 900. I checked the statistics and saw that many people use at least 1024x768 so i thought there is no need for those huge blank parts around my contents..

I always thought having percentage based site is better, until I encountered numerous problems when having images in the design. Images (mostly) are fixed sized and *may* screw up the percentage.

Also I realised that a bunch of thumbnail images won't self justify to the next line if they are arranged together. Meaning: you have to decide how many thumbnails per line, if too many thumbnails in one line, the images will blow up the margin to be > 100%, hence screwing the design. If too few images, then there will be plenty of empty space for those using bigger display. I wish I could show an example but I have already deleted the *problematic* page.

On the other hand, percentage-based works well if you have purely text contents (no images).

I prefer mini layouts. Easy readability.

We always design 760x768 layouts. Looks perfect on 800x600 and higher resolution screens.

I am thinking now why not only 1024x768 ?
But I have to agree with aspidov on 760x768 or something like that. :)

You have to design for 800 X 600, there is still a large percentage of people using that resolution.

Yes, but sometimes client ask for 950 or something bigger, and stats on old sites show that 800x600 is not so big % on those sites.

I too generally design 800*600, but I usually run through some sites with clients and see what they like best and why and that will generally determine for me. At the end of the day it is what the client wants.

If it's a site for me I generally use 1024*768 just because I like it better and the Internet crowd seems to be migrating that direction.

I would actualy prefer expandable layouts, the ones that float, i don't realy know the right name everybody uses, but it looks like SitePoint's and DP's. Layouts that expand on 95% percent of the screen would be the best choice, but when it comes to something like this http://www.realwd.com/book/book.jpg there is no real choice, either 950 or 750 in width, it all depends on the client.

i usually go with a 650px wide table. this fits on just about every screen size, and its a good size for easy reading. if your table is too wide, you end up with looooooong lines and this can look like its not going to be fun to read, you get to the end of a line and then you have to go allllll the way back to the left side of the screen and find your place again.

Yes, but today everybody wants ads on left, right, middle and few more here and there.

    Nemanja: " What about content ? "
    Adsense freak: " What content ? "
    Nemanja: " ... "

    :)

You have to consider that a lot of people surf the net at work  and they do not have the browser full screen. They keep it a smaller so to try and hide what they are doing ;) So 800x600 is a good size even though most people have there resolution set to a higher setting.

It really depends on how much content you need to display. I generally use a 720 max width.

Just a question, is there a way to find out what the browser size is of your visitors?
