I have to agree, somewhat.
No doubt there is a place for natural self-promotion of your own content, but this should be natural. You are expected to share your own content, but off-page SEO should be driven primarily by your audience.
You need to create content that people will feel the desire to share, and you need to provide the methods for achieving this with buttons positioned prominently on your site.

The primary focus should be on-page SEO, creating compelling content, more useful and interesting than your competitors. Consider new formatting of your content, as Google is increasingly seeking other signals to determine whether your content is more thorough than that of others.

Pay attention to the basics such a page load times, bounce rates, errors and so on. Then focus on content and layout, paying specific attention to use of images, labeling, links out, bullet points, quotes, authorship and so on.

There are a hundred things people can do to their content now to make it more thorough than their competitors, whether that's simply identifying yourself as the author or including new signals to enforce the idea that you are an authority on that subject.

Look at your content, discover what is missing, then try to work out how can you include it and where.
