Best strategy nowadays is...create great content, and market that content through social media to naturally gain backlinks. Google loves natural links.
SEO has change quite a bit. But right now it's all about social signals and high PR relevant links... You can build other links but also.. The important is too really have a very good link diversity and provide a great user experience. If you can get people to stay on your site Google will reward you... You need a lot of facebook likes, retweets, and Google + is a must to say the least...
Social Signals, Anchor Text Diversity, Link Building Velocity, Original onPage Content, Authorship, and doing everything you possibly can to not get flagged!

The basic tricks are the same, there has been a bit of tweaking on the topic of link spamming though, you need to take care of that part.
Try to invite/hire authority guest bloggers in your industry to contribute content to your site to attract and build more naturally earned links.
I think you can try, but ultimately fail. I say this because, why would a "authority figure" guest blog for you? Most, will find themself in the other way around.
