There is a 90+ year old lady who would really appreciate your help.

I am trying to help an eldery friend and don't know the answers. She only prints something a few times a month using a first class MAC running OS10. Her son bought her an Epson printer which uses the dura-brite ink supply. The printer does not care for the lack of use. I spoke with a local repair center today and learned that the dura-brite ink is more prone to creating clots from lack of use than regular ink. Cost to clean will exceed the cost of a new printer.

    Anyway.

She does not need or desire color. No one seems to sell a black only inkjet. So I found a couple of moderately priced laser printers.

I guess my real question is are there any potential problems from light duty use with a laser printer? The toner is a powder and not a liquid? Would a page a week keep the thing printing either way?

Help me with this and I owe you one.

They last forever and no you don't have to use them all the time, I have a $100 Konica Minolta laster printer now and it's been great.

The only thing you need to worry about is moisture, keep it out of damp rooms/areas.

I would recommend an inkjet - HP simple version (color in separate cartridge) You can then setup to print greyscale with only the black cartridge (at least the one I am using now does.)

If she gets a laser, she will be bummed when replacing the toner at $50 to $100 a pop.

Yes i would say get a basic HP inkjet for her or if shes not gonna print much, get the basic laser.

If she doe not do much printing inkjet cartidges might get clogged, but i think a page a wekk should be OK.

To this point in time looks like 3 votes for a laser based on comments.

She may not print for a month at a time and the $80 cost for a new toner once a year would be a lot less than what she spent last year replacing cartridges.

Not mention some one having to go by and install either of them for her.

InkJets are garbage and cost way too much to operate. Lasers require less disposables and less maintenance.

I wouldn't have an inkjet if you paid for it.

Score a printer off of eBay. I got a great Lexmark all in one brand new for $20, and a great great great Canon Pixma iP1600 for $20 also, which is almost as fast a laser printer. :D
