Hi all, I have been looking on google for a couple weeks now, and have been trying to find a solution
but so far nothing has brought any results...
my synaptics touchpad is able to move the mouse cursor but the "tapping" and the buttons do not work.
My laptop is a HP Dv6604nr using XP

Just go to a shop and make it right.

I think this is the best way because it is a hardware problem.

Could be a driver issue or an external issue. Try reinstalling the driver for your touchpad.

Open up the Synaptics control panel and make sure you've got the extra features turned on.

And as hash1 said, try reinstalling the drivers. They're here
