Laptop for College

Discussion in 'Hardware' started by Jako, Jul 19, 2006.

I'll be attending college this fall, close to a month from now and I'll need a laptop.

I have a lot of money saved up from work, graduation, etc. Any suggestions?

Please link me to the product page, if you have experience with the laptop, why you like it, etc.

To be honest, I would get a new dual-core dell, make sure it's 7200rpm though. They are really good and only cost around $800 or so.

I've just worked on several clients dell's and usually they are built cheap..
in other words, they will have high power this, and top of the line that.. but the parts are really crap and cheaply made...
maybe not all area like that, but I've worked on new dell's less then a year old, and I'm amazed at what the owners paid for them :p

yup, thats one of the mac's id recomend, my wife uses a powerbook at her job, and usually has work to bring home. I hope on it w/e I can..lol u have to see one in person tho to really apperciate it, it's my new fav thats for sure

First of all, think about what's the main usage.

if it is for text processing/web browsing, you don't need a dual core. A centrino 1.7 GHz will do the job and the battery last longer

And think about if you need to carry it around. If yes, go for a 14.1 widescreen. If not, get a desktop replacement with bigger screen

60 GB of HD and 512 MB will be enough. Upgrade the CD drive to dvd drive.

If you want to buy from Dell, check this page daily http://www.edealinfo.com/dell/
sometime there are insane deal going on there

I have a Dell 700M. I paid $800 for it slightly used. It has 1g Ram, 60g HD, 1.8 Pentium M. It weighs around 4.5 lbs with the extended life battery (around 5 - 6 hrs) and has a sweet looking widescreen. It even has a forum for it's ecstatic users.

If you don't want to spend MEGA bucks to make sure your laptop jives with your college's network and OS of choice, DON'T get a Mac. Macs are great, yes, but i've seen people in school pay hundreds in software just to be able to use university required software (Word, Excell, PowerPoint...just to name a few).

The 700m is being replaced by the m1210 so you can probably find some good deals on some used ones at ebay or anandtech.com.
