You can buy a normal server for $100 on ebay. Why would you want to use a laptop?

yes but if you have a core 2 duo laptop and want to set up a small hosting company would it be like seting it in a rack server with core 2 duo procesor?

And do laptops use more electricity?
What are the diference between a laptop and a rack server?

Laptops are not meant for server purpose. You are way better off with a rack server which is less expensive. You wouldn't want to break your laptop, since laptops parts are comparatively expensive.

server hardware is built for more reliablity, laptops..not somuch. however, if you're trying to use a retired laptop in place of a server? why not. judging from the cost of a rackmountable FULL server? yeah. servers get expensive, fast. depending on what you're doing with it.

what are you doing with it?

edit: whoever said a rackserver is 110$ is insane. perhaps for a lowend dedicated from another hosting provider, but to PURCHASE one? 110$ buys you what, a p3 with 1gb of ram? or a standard rackmount case. probably not even that.
